My Pekin is 6 weeks old. Am I seeing the makings of a drake feather? Or too early? I'd like to add more ducks but don't want another drake. #newduckmomma

Looking through old pictures of my Cayuga drake, he didn't even have his drake feather yet at 8 weeks, so I don't know if yours would yet or not. Pekins might mature faster though, I'm not sure how that works. Within a week or so you should start hearing a difference in the sounds it makes though. Hens quack, drakes have a deep, raspy sound to them. That will be the first indication. :)

6 weeks is too early. After they get all their feathers in, they molt again and get their adult feathers at about 10-13 weeks of age. This is when the Drake feather will show up. It is more obvious with other breeds because they have different coloring. So the drakes will go from looking like females to getting their nuptial plumage.

Is that black spots on him? You should be able to tell by the sound it’s making, a female quacks and a drake has a raspy sound
