Pekin duck lost mate. Need help with questions.

Hello my new friends. I have a few questions about a pekin duck.(white duck) I live on a stretch of lakes, we have only 2 pekin ducks. Unfortunately the one died, I don't know how it died but the duck is alone and the community drained the lakes, the duck has water on its side but there is another duck- black and white body and red on its face its at the other end of the three lakes. I'm worried for then both neither have a mates and they can't get to one another because of the lakes drained and the dams between them. Winter is around the corner, do ducks huttle to keep warm? id like to find them mates or each other but don't know how to go about it. It's so sad to see both ducks totaly alone. Any suggestions? Can I purchase ducks and put them in the earea that they are in? Will they bond? Fight? Will they Die due to the lakes and surrounding if there is not enough water????? Geese come and go but these two are stuck here, lakes apart from one another and very much alone. Thanks for any suggestions you can give me. I really want to help them.

Hi, Nancy Jean, welcome to BYC. The ducks you describe are very likely of two different breeds. The duck with the 'red face' is very likely a Muscovy and then of course you have the Pekin which is a mallard derived breed. I'm concerned that the lakes have been drained leaving the ducks more vulnerable to predation. I would not personally add more ducks to this precarious situation. If the present ducks could be captured and placed in a controlled environment, this would probably be the best situation.

I can't tell you how many times I thought that. The Muscovy barly has water. I guess i need to concentrate on that one asap. The pekin is definitely in a better place. One more question. Mallard ducks due visit the pekin duck's water so he/she will be OK with the company of them? thank you so much for your time I greatly appreciate you taking the time out to answer my questions. I want to help but sometimes one never knows when to let nature take its course or when to get involved and for some reason I'm being drawn to these ducks.

The ducks are at risk - especially with the lakes drained. Even if they huddled together, that would not keep them safe, and may not keep them warm enough.

Do you or someone you know have room to take them in?

You can rescue them - but they would need a protected place.
