Hello fellow BYCers! I was hoping to get some information that might help my Pekin Duck, "Honey". She is 23 weeks old. During the day, she spends her time with a Buff Orpington Duck, 2 Pekin Drakes, a Cayuga Drake, and a Mallard Drake. They stay on the pond or the pond dam all day. At night (when they participate, they do come off the pond way more often than not), I call them off the pond with " Southern States Floating Fowl Feed" and let them eat in a small area in front of their duck house that is blocked with a play yard to keep them from going back out to the pond. It's usually about 30 minutes until the last Drake is filling up and they're ready to be locked in their duck house for the night. (I call them up just before sun set so they're ready for lock-up by dark) I let them back out on the pond at first light. I know that I have way too many drakes for my 2 ducks. Everyone is the same age with an exception of the Mallard and Cayuga that are one week younger. My 2 Pekin Drakes are not mature yet and do not even attempt to mate with the girls, so that's the only saving grace right now. I hope that was a complete history but feel free to ask for any information needed that I might have left out.

Tonight I noticed that Honey seems quite hoarse and has sneezed several times. She is eating and acting normal otherwise but I was hoping to get ahead of any possible sickness, if she is sick. I have noticed a fish crane hanging out at the pond this evening and every few days for the last month or more and tonight my ducks seemed quite spooked by this crane. We also have Canada Geese in the area right now. Before August 2019, we've always hosted at least 1 Canada Geese pair while they built a nest and hatched out goslings on a small island in the middle of our pond, every year they are migrating through. We have extremely large lakes on the other side of the road in a gated community. The distance between their lake and my pond is less than a quarter mile (way less but I just asked for help in estimating the distance and he is saying less than a quarter mile) and I know they're hosting Canada Geese right now. With all of this shared, what do I need to be on the lookout for? My concerns are the mating attempts that always happen while they're swimming around in the pond. I hope that Honey hasn't experienced a near drowning episode during a mating attempt. I am always nervous about the Buff Duck as the drakes are quite larger than her so she goes under often, but I haven't noticed this with my Pekin Honey. Also, is it common for wild geese and cranes to carry diseases around that could be making my girl sick? Thank you so much for your time

i lost a huge jumbo pekin to a small appleyard drake, i came home and she was weazing and coughing and died over night

And like @thumper650 seid they can choke a little on food. its like they inhale a crumb

The drakes could get very cruel very quickly

I was thinking maybe they need more water while they’re eating. Mine will cough while they’re gobbling their food, but stop once they drink and wash their food down.

They've outgrown their kiddie pool for swimming (at least they seem to think so. I guess it is a huge difference between a kiddie pool and a large pond) but I still use it so they're able to dunk their heads and drink as much as they need while they're eating ;)

This scares me so much. Did you notice her sounding hoarse? I wish it was easier to rehome these 4 boys. I can't decide if I should keep 1 Drake (both girls seem to love the largest Pekin Drake the most but the Buff duck seems too small for him. For what it's worth, these are my first ducks that I've had for any amount of time so I'm learning as I go) or just rehome them all and just keep the 2 girls until I can get more ducklings & hopefully geese.

Honey has always been a VERY vocal duck. She is loud and she quacks A LOT. She hasn't ever sounded hoarse though so I'm worried. I noticed her voice sounding so hoarse right before locking them up and they were all spooked by that fish crane that had just flown off. Everyone of them were sounding concerned. The fish crane was about 40ft from them and in a shallow part of the pond. She was on the pond dam at her duck house. I hate to get them all woke up but I'm going to check on her as soon as my daughter falls asleep. I'll just take them a treat and let them get a drink of water so I can check on her. Poor girl. I'm going to start looking for a home for the boys tomorrow. I fear Honey and TomTom (duck with a masculine name) will be miserable if I take away all 4 drakes, but I'm not familiar with how this works. Is it better to have a Drake to protect the ducks (like a rooster for the hens)? If it's best to keep a Drake with them, do I choose the Drake and if so, how? I want the best for all of my animals and of course I'd love to keep them all, but I can't allow that to happen, especially to the girls, if it's going to be anything like I'm anticipating.

she was hoarse

Could you get a video of your duck and he sounds?

Its hard to choose when you love them soo much, iam in the same situation with drakes!

Yes, she was hoarse. I'll go out as soon as either my daughter falls asleep or if my phone charges before she falls asleep, I'll just take her with me to check on Honey and get a video

i wouldnt consider a drake necessary, i havent seen one act brave or alarm like a rooster, other people mightve but none of mine ever did. @Miss Lydia @DuckyDonna have either of you?
i do like keeping a drake for fertilizing eggs and they have such nice colors
