I have a 3 year old Pekin Duck who has trouble walking on her right leg now. When she is sitting down she acts all fine and not sick. But her leg does not let her move. I think the problem came from over mating so I have her isolated and put a splint with vet wrap on the leg. I do Not know what else to do so please help with giving me tips. I will even drop a picture down below.
Thank you

Several things could be going on. It could just be a simple sprain. Pekins with their weight can have a harder time with sprains.

It could be an egg laying issue and that is putting pressure on a nerve.

I would take off the splint. Unless you know what is broken or injured, it is possible it could make things worse. You will want to gently feel along the leg and see if there are any breaks. You can use the other leg for a comparison. Notice if the leg feels hot or not. Is anything on the leg swollen compared to the other leg? Lastly, feel on the left and right of the keel bone for a string like structure. If you feel only smooth bone, it doesn't have a slipped tendon.

I would also put the duck into a deep bath where it can't touch the ground. This will take pressure off the leg and allow you to see how much it can move on it's own. If she is having trouble floating, you may need to help her.

I'd def get her on some liquid B complex. It is the best for leg support for an injury or a niacin deficiency. Also, water therapy is an excellent way to get the weight off the legs and back and give her a way to keep her muscles from getting any weaker. Just make sure she is able to get in and out safely or you put her in and out. Over-mating can def cause problems as well as egg-laying problems putting pressure on the nerves in the back which will cause leg weakness. When was the last time she laid an egg?

Let us know how she is doing.

@moebay33 how is your duck doing?
I started giving her the niacin like you said and the water therapy and now she is able to walk really good actually and on her own. Also, I wanted to ask you about molting. Is it normal for her to be molting down on the neck. And what can I do about the fur around her eyes being very dry and crusty.

Thanks

That is great that she is walking better! The molting is not usual, but it is rather late for it to be going on. It could be from her lack of mobility, causing ammonia burns. The eyes are likely from her lack of mobility. The water therapy will help clean out her eyes. I would also rinse her eyes with saline a few times a day. And you probably want to treat it with terramycin, since it is likely an infection. become an infection. Their tears can cake on around their eyes and take a while to go away.

Do you have pictures of her eyes and neck?
