Last fall we acquired a pair of Pekin ducks (male & female). They are ALWAYS together making their way around the yard, garden, etc. A month and a half ago she decided she was going to sit on some eggs and we let her since it was a first for us and a very fun experience for the kids! Out of 8 eggs she hatched out 3 this past weekend. We've had her and the ducklings separated from the drake but he more or less has been sitting or pacing outside of the duck pen guarding/waiting for his partner. He gets locked in the chicken coop at night much to his dismay. Yesterday and today we let momma and the ducklings out and there was much rejoicing by the male and female to be back together! As I've carefully monitored their activity together in fear the drake might go after the ducklings he's actually been just as protective as the mom. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with a similar situation. As much fun as it is to sit and watch them I just can't afford to spend all my time during the day keeping an eye on them. I feel bad separating the drake but if it's better to err on the side of caution I will!

In my experience when there is a strong pair bond many drakes will readily accept ducklings. In a flock situation is where I have run into problems, but given enough space very infrequently.
