This evening I was wearing thin latex medical gloves to clean out my 4-month old Pekin's pen. I didn't realize I had dropped a straggler glove on the ground and Pete swiped it and ran from me. I couldn't catch her (yes, HER name is Pete... we thought she was a boy at first) and she swallowed it all the way before my husband finally could grab her. We opened her beak and tried to see if any piece might still be visible that we could pull it back out, but it's gone. We really love our duck, and I am so upset with myself for not realizing I had left a glove behind. I am so afraid she is going to die from an obstruction. Any recommendations for something we can do? We are new to duck keeping and have no idea. Any help from the experts on this forum would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Alison

Of she swallowed it ok, it'll probably come out in a day or two ok. Ducks eat EVERYTHING! Mine ate part of a Kroger bag that my daughter left behind, I got it back the next day :/

Thank you. I know this sounds gross, but I will be very glad to see that glove again. I know that if a dog or cat were to swallow something like that, it would be a really bad, potential lethal, problem. I will report back the outcome.

Accidents happen and strange things get eaten, don't beat yourself up too bad. Keep an due on her and watch for any sign of distress.

If it makes you feel any better I had a very lovely pekin duck named Fred. She faithfully gave me and egg a day 10 months of the year. I think a lot of first time duck owners have a female with a very male name, but it adds to their ducky charm. Jeeze, I miss her.

Thank you. We really love her. I never thought I could get really attached to a bird, but she is one of our family. She is with us all the time out in the yard, and sometimes we even let her in the house for a few minutes at a time. Its funny to hear her feet flapping on the hardwood floors and she likes to go exploring around the house.

Even though we know Pete is a girl now, she knows and responds to her name, so we would not think of changing it. Besides, the name suits her. The name Fred probably suited your girl too. We keep looking for Pete to lay her first egg, but I think she's probably still a bit young.

I sure hope she will be okay. She's normally in bed at this time, but I've been out sitting with her. She doesn't even want her favorite treat - tomatoes. But, it is pitch dark out now and she probably just wants me to leave her alone so she can get some rest. I just gave her goodnight and left the bowl with her. If the tomatoes aren't gone by 6:00 am, I'll know she isn't feeling well because she can't resist tomatoes!

In the stickies above there is a molasses mix directions. This is a laxative for ducks and will help speed things along for you and her both. Read the dosage and length of time to give closely please.
