Hi we are new to ducks and one of our Pekin Ducklings(2 weeks old) has a strange looking green spot on the bill. I have seen the pics of the mossy look and it doesn't look like at all. It almost appears to be on the inside and you can see the shadow of it from the out side. I am just worried about them I don't want anything to happen they are our new feather children. Thank you for your quick replies.

Could it be a blood blister from an injury to the bill?? Some ducks will get discoloration on the bill- but it is generally not until they are older than yours is. Some spotting can be caused by hormone levels- but another alternative could be a fungal infection.

The one has a runny nose so they are on Duramycin, just started last night. They are in an old ferret cage with no sharp edges or anything so not sure how it would get an injury. If it is fungal will the duramycin help/fix it? It looks black and blue on the interior of the bill right in the front. Thank you so very much for your time. Also, if I can get a good enough pic how do I post it on here?

Yes, you can post a pic on here. My pekin Waddles got a green spot on the inside of her bill, but I could see it from the outside. After a few days it went away, and she is healthy as can be! I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless it doesn't go away within a few days.

Upload your photo on http://photobucket.com/ and then copy the direct link, and press the "Img" button when posting on here, and in between the brackets put the link. You can preview it first to make sure you did it right!

You can also go to "uploads" in the bar at the top of the page and upload your photos there. Then, use the one with the IMG tag to place them in your post. The only thing is, unless you have a paid membership here, you are limited in how many you can upload. So, if you go that route, choose carefully the ones you want to upload.

If it looks just like it's a different color of the beak I wouldn't worry about it too much. A lot of ducks I have (or had) have had discoloration on their beaks since they aren't the highest quality, but it's never been an issue. It
s more of an aesthetic thing than anything else I guess.

Anyway, once you get pictures up it'll be easier to tell for sure. You might not be able to though, since they changed the site so new people can't immediately post pictures. Maybe get a mod's okay if it won't work?

Here is a pic of the discoloration on my one ducklings bill, it is not the greatest pic but the best I can get. You can see it go across the front of the bill.
Also, I have a few other questions I have been looking for on line and can't find. How much exercise should my babies be getting? I give them swim time in the tub every other day, but being as I live in the hills of WNY they don't go out yet. Also, after giving them duramycin for 2 days one of them had 2/3 poops that where clear and a gel like substance and now they have projectile poops is this normal? The poop doesn't have a horrible odor just a lot of force behind it.

Should I be leaving there food in the re all the time or giving them feeding times? I have them on the Dumor chick starter. And one more thing they are both breathing on occasion with their mouths open and it appears that they are having labored breathing, but act normal, eat and drink normal. What is going on with them, and should I be concerned?
Thank you again so much for your time and words of wisdom.

That baby's bill looks normal to me.
If they are panting they are most likely overheated, what is the temp in their brooder? I leave food and water with my ducklings at all times...I place the feed and water at one end of the brooder, then at the other end where I keep the heat light I place a facecloth...their blankie :) Their poop also sounds normal to me.

as for their swimming... I let my ducklings swim once a day until they are about 3-4 weeks old, then I up it to 2 or 3 (depending on how busy I am with other things). I love giving them some swim time in the tub come evening time then all of us snuggling up on the couch in front of the t.v....there's nothing like having sleeping ducklings on your chest and lap :)

Your duckling is just fine. Over time, pekins get marks on their bills that start out a lighter color then become black or dark gray. No worries!!!

Oh and ducklings MUST have water available 24/7 and it should be right next to the food. They do a eat drink eat drink eat drink pattern when they eat. They need the water to get the food down. Unless its grapes. GAWD my ducks love grapes.
