pellets - turn them into mash?

Is it safe to crush growers or layers pellets and add water to make a mash? Thought my birds would like a bit of a change now and then.

I give my chicks mash mixed with water. If you don't want to crush the pellets you can by crumbles. All the crumbles are is all ready crushed pellets.
