Pellets vs Crumbles?

I mix a bag of scratch with a bag of pellets. It all fits in a large trash can. I just put the food on the ground.

Well And Price Was What Started Me Thinking..... @ Our Tsc Now That They Have Purina, I've Gotten That..... (which I Think They Lowered The Dumor Food About A Dollar Or So Because It's A Dollar Less Than Purina And It Wasn't Before They Got It In) So I Seemed To Be In The Store Forever Yesterday Staring At The Bags To Find A Difference Other Than Size..... And After Much Consideration I Decided You 'technically' Get More Food Per Pound In Crumbles..... Both Come In A 50 Lb Bag For 11.99.... I Just Don't Know Why I'm So Leery Of Crumbles. Do They Have Any Effect On The Crop More So Than Crumbles? Are They Filled Up Faster With Pellets.
What A Silly Thing I'm Stuck On. Lol

50 pounds is 50 pounds regardless, unless they're adding rocks to the bag

I have only used crumbles but have heard that the pellets have far less waste, so I have asked my feed guy to order me a bag of pellets and see how it goes????

I like the pellets for the layers. Less waste. They make such a mess with the crumbles. Seems like the pellets go alot farther.

They may not eat them good at first, I don't think they like change. But they will eat them when they get hungry.

It always takes me a few weeks to get new birds to eat pellets. They prefer cumbles, but they waste so much of it!

I usually feed the bulk of the pellets in the morning, when they are in the run and hungry. They eat it. I don't throw down scratch until later in the day. If you mix scratch with pellets, they'll just eat scratch and will only eat the pellets if they have to ... same reason I don't get the cookies out til the kids finish dinner!

I just switched to pellets because my 18 birds were going through (flipping out) about a bag a week!! Aaahh!! Now that I've went to pellets, there is very little waste and like someone else said, it's easier for them to see to pick up.

Also, on your feeder, I would put "breaks" across the top so that the chickens can't flick their heads from side to side flicking the food out. Just my .02 on that one....I had to do that when I used crumbles.

Good luck!!

My previous flock preferred pellets. I preferred them as well...seemed to be a LOT less wasted or spilled.

ATM tho since we have a mixed crew of the 12 week old babies and the 2 adults, we are all still on the grower crumble. We will be switching over soon to the pellets <yay> in the next few weeks when the little ones hit 16 weeks or so.

Do you happen to have a picture or what you are referring to? They do get some out on the floor etc but not as bad as i had previously expected. Although we go through about a bag every week and a half (roughly)
MAybe the next bag, i'll try pellets? Will they get used to it by the end of the bag or will it take longer?

PS.... does anyone know if they eat more when they get closer to laying? I realize it's not like having a baby that isn't in a shell but they never used to eat as much as they are now...... just curious
