I have an 8x10 pen with wooden decking floor. I'd like to use sand, but of course it would go through the boards. What would you suggest I put down over the boards before the sand? Just plywood? I'd like something that won't rot quickly.

DH suggested weed fabric... Any reason that wouldn't work?

The only possible downside I see with weedblock is when your chickens go to town digging (to dustbath and such). Eventually, they may tear the cloth. You could use thin plywood, or even scrap vinyl flooring over the decking...

If your sand is coarse contruction type sand, maybe even scrap carpet (trying to think reusing/cheap here).
ETA: well heck - if we're talking cheap, even an old blanket or old sheets???

I put treated plywood down then covered it with a piece of cheap roll linoleum. Cut the linoleum so that it is slightly larger ( 1" works) than the floor area and let it turn up the wall slightly. it creates kind of a tub that keeps any liquid out and it's really easy to clean when you need to.
