I have a large Embden who is between 30-40 lbs. For some odd reason the joint on his/her foot swelled up. No visual injury.
It's the joint where all arms of the toes come together. He/she is eating fine and is secluded from the flock, but can see them. Trying to keep him/her from stressing it more. Can I give a 3-4CC injection of Penicillin in the leg muscle? Thanks!

Before embarking on a course of antibiotics I would be sure that the swelling is due to infection. Is the swelling inflammed or hot to the touch? Also is there any injury on the underside of the foot? It may be a swelling due to injury and perhaps rest and daily bathing may resolve the situation.

If you do feel you should proceed with an antibiotic then match the dose rate to the the weight of your birds, Some antibiotics vary in strength. The leg muscle is an goodl site for injection but it is uncomfortable. I have injected into the side of the breast but it is a little tricky due to the thickness of the feathers and down.
