Pennies in a ziplock keep flies away?

I started doing this last spring and I will swear by it. There are still flies of course, there will always be flies, but 4 or 5, not 60 or 70!

The key is in the last statement I believe. The fly sees numerous images and the pennies in the water create a prism that is much too busy for a flies eyes.

Sad enough, it doesn't work with the buffalo gnat though.

Around here you see the occasional clear glass jug with water in it.
I fianlly stopped at a guys house (when he was outside) and asked.
He said it keeps stray dogs, cats, shunks etc... away. It refracts light like a big lens and as the animal moves it sees the refraction as another animal or other movement and they shy away.

I'll bet it does the same thing for the flys but even worse because they have 3000 eyes.

Snopes did a piece on this subject that you might find interesting to read. Their conclusion is basically "undetermined." I live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and the bags are a pretty common sight at restaurants with outside dining. I'm thinking of trying it on our back patio.
