Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Well we have probably lost one of our leghorns. When we clean out the brooding room I park a 'barrow under the window and shovel all the bedding out the window. Well she jumped into the window and was gone before I could react. We'll see if she comes for breakfast in the morning.
are you sure she isn't sitting there wanting in? they usually go right back at dark, and then become roosting zombies in the dark.

I need to vent.

I should know bad things happen in threes in my life. Last week it was the sick chicks - that I am still battling. So far only one more death and quite a few are showing improvement. Most of you do not know, but Sarah does... I have an elderly lady living with me and has been for almost 2yrs. She's 81 and going through a nasty divorce with a 20yr younger idiot. She's been done wrong, but seriously, I can see why he got fed up with her. Last year around Feb/Mar she fell and had compression fractures in her spine that also caused her to have a colostomy bag for the rest of her life. She doesn't want to take care of it or herself, to just cut to the case. For months I had to explain to her why it was so important to wash her hands after dumping her bag. And I had to point why it was bad to dump the bag in any container in her room and let it sit for days. I had to explain why it was bad to lay in her bed for hours after her colostomy bag and/or diaper leaked overnight. It's been trying. BTW, I am no relation to this woman in any way shape or form. My mom cleaned for her for 15yrs and with the divorce, she had to leave and none of her family wants anything to do with her. She held up the divorce by at least 3months last year while she was in the hospital/nursing home after her fall. She could have been out in June, but she refused to show any independence and wouldn't care for her colostomy bag on her own for the last 3 months.

Yesterday she gets a large letter in the mail from her friend that I have noticed she's been sneaking calls to when no one is around (and left a suspicious message on the machine) and I opened the letter. I flipped out. Here she's been having her friend call every agency she could and every elderly apartment place she could looking for a new place! My mom is POA and executor of the estate and we do EVERYTHING for her. We've already told her there is no way she can live on her own, but if she wanted to go to a nursing home, that was up to her. We've been telling her this since she came back from the fall in September. This BS, the sneaking and she wasn't telling her friend everything (she doesn't even know she has a colostomy bag). We have done everything we can to accommodate this woman and for her to do this?! What really irritates me is we are stuck in this house because we needed a 4 bedroom ASAP when she moved in with us. She knows we can't afford this place without her. I have been asking for months what she wants, and then to have it dropped on me like this when I literally have a month and a half to figure out what we are going to do because without her, we can not stay here.

Some days I wonder what the heck I have ever done to deserve the life I have. The BS is never ending.

So. I am waiting to hear what's happening with the mortgage we applied for so we can buy this place first. I should know by the end of this week. If we do not get pre-approved I will have to sell all my birds, the goat and rehome the cats. I'm absolutely appalled at the way we are being treated after going out of our way for her. I am upset that I finally have a decent flock of birds I want and now...

hoping things get better for you

:gig Unfortunately, there are so few with our last name we're nearly all related (at least within about 50 miles)....but it is fun when we go to Ashland, Mt Carmel area. We have relatives on that side of the mountains but honestly have NO clue who they are or what they look like. That's when it really gets fun ?-"You related to so and so Kopitsky?" Me-"Yep." ?-"How they doing?" Me-"Never met 'em."

I grew up in Shamokin and my one football coach was a Kopitsky!!!!

My chickens run lose and never go far, she'll be back,

Did she come right back? Those leghorns are primadonnas, but they steal your heart. They remind me a bit of the 'mean girls' from high school. Leaders of the pack, skinny, and yet, a ginormous egg nearly everyday, even through winter.

Ok, I'm at my wit's end. Bleu is sick AGAIN. I've quarantined her twice before, and she seemed to get better, but last night (in the rain) when I went to lock up, I noticed her huddled under the ramp to the coop. I picked her up and tossed her in, figuring she was just cold and wet. Well, today, I go out to the coop, and she's huddled just inside the door. I finally just picked her up and brought her in. I gave her a bath, as she was just disgusting. She sat perfectly still for it. Her feathers EVERYWHERE are broken. I had thought the ones on her back were from the boys riding her too much. But now I'm not sure. I checked her for mites and lice, she's clean. Gave her some liquid vitamins and she drank a tiny bit of water. Wrapped her in a towel, and put her on my chest while I lay here this afternoon. The cat then climbed on top of her and fell asleep too...ok that was kind of funny. She stayed wrapped in the towel all evening while we went out (had to, had chiro appointments, and it's DH's birthday) Came home and gave her water and she drank and drank. I offered her some oatmeal...but all she wanted to do was drink the water. Noticed this evening that she's not opening the one eye at all. Now I have her wrapped in a fresh towel.

Ok, ideas on what's wrong with her? Is she just at the bottom of the pecking order and therefore not getting food/water? I have noticed that when she eats (like when I throw treats) she sits down to eat. So whatever is right in front of her, she has access to, but since I throw all over the yard, the others are running from place to place and getting more. What should I do for her beyond what I'm doing? I moved the barred rocks out of the quarantine cage and into the little coop inside the big coop, so once I get it cleaned out tomorrow, I can move her back out there....or should I keep her in the house for a bit?

..some times we don't always see how much others really do for us. I do understand what it feels like to be taken advantage of. It hurts and you have every right to feel the way you do. I have worked with the elderly, and it is /can be extremely trying. I cannot possibly tell you what to do, but there is always an underlying reason for others behavior, it doesn't make how you are being treated right, but I'm saying, maybe she is having a "real" issue & cannot find the correct way to handle it. Just a thought. You have given her so much of your self & that makes you a very good person. I hope this situation is resolved in a positive way, for everyone.
