Tweetr - H&H heritage and Rare poulty in York haven PA have some speckled sussex. They are not laying age, but , i think they have some older chicks. :)
Thanks Motherhen - I will have a look into that!
I have two 8 week old pullets left for sale.
How much were you wanting for them and where are you located?

Broody question. I had a hen go broody. Didn't leave the nest for 3 days. Last night I moved the nesting box and the broody to a separate isolated part of my coop. She seemed to have settled in fine when I checked on her this morning. Went to check on them at lunch and it appears the door wasn't latched right and a breeze blew the doors open. My broody was walking around my yard by herself. I couldn't get her to go into the isolated area again but I got her back into the run with the others. I put her nesting box back in the original place, in the hopes she will return. What are the odds of her going back to being broody. I picked up fertile eggs for her last night, hoping she would hatch them for me. Now what?

very good chance,,,do you have any fake eggs you could leave for her......what's her breed, some are easier to entice then others.......I have a silkie that all i have to do is whisper the word chicks to her...

does anybody know if straw is ok for bedding for my egg layers?
The only thing I worry about with straw other than the mold mentioned by several others is that it can carry bird lice & mites since it has been exposed to wild birds. As long as your birds are treated regularly for lice & mites you should be fine.

Looking to purchase a trio of brahmas LF. Looking for local or chicks shipped.
I have a trio of buff brahma bantams, but no LF.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome.

Plop hr back on the nest & see if she stays.

That is it!

I need info on peepers. I have looked for them, but they all seem to be for adult chickens or pheasants/partridges 3-6 weeks and up. Do these sizes work on 3-6wk old chicks?

I had 2 more dead chicks, via vent picking / cannibalism. I must take action now.

I have golf balls in the nesting boxes because the girls kept laying on the floor in the corner. Never took them out, so she was sitting on 2 golf balls. Just went to check on her and she was back in the box. So I moved her back to the isolated side. Tonight I will give her the fertile eggs, and make sure the door don't blow open again.

Have you thought about maybe they are just bored? What about adding a dust box, a babycake, some scratch in their bedding, dig up a large clump of yard and plop it in their area to have some fun with grass dirt and all. I've never had a picker feather vent etc but my birds have 6 acres to roam starting around 1 week of age they free range with hen. Something to try before others.
