That pot pie looks very yummy!:drool

He sure liked it!  I wrote down what all I put in it after dinner so I can make it again. I rarely start with recipes, more just 'ideas' that I have to then figure out what could make them work.... if they work well then I write it down and add it to my recipe box. DH calls them my 'mad scientist experiments'...

I do that a lot. Usually it's because we are out of something I needed for the dish I planned & no one had bothered to tell me they used the last of what I needed. Now the meal suddenly gets changed half way through the cooking process to make something edible with what we DO have. Sometimes it turns out great & becomes a new favorite & sometimes it goes to the critters...lol

fisher, last pic is a SG dorking?.......very kewl......
She is a Silver Pencil Rock.... they are beautiful birds, she is the friendliest of the 5 SPR hens we have.... usually underfoot or very close nearby any time I am outside. Very curious about stupid people tricks for sure. I can understand the Dorking mix up though, I love the SG dorkings, but haven't found a local source for heritage eggs from them yet. I was lucky enough to find a SQ breeder of the SPRs when Gracie was broody in the spring, so went with them. I would love to find an egg source for heritage Cornish and Dorking birds... Here is another pic of Lacey showing off her pretty feathers....
This girl is stunning. I really like the pencilled feathering. Stake seems to love those Dorkings too...now MsLadyawk....hmmmm i may have to check them out. I noticed a LOT of branches in your run, does this help keep down the boredom? I've been keeping everyone in their runs a lot these days, a fix for the boredom would be good.

Hi everybody! I've been MIA and have a lot of catching up to do. Started an ebay selling business on the side, got sick and been generally busy. Just wanted to pop in and say Hello!

Christmas is coming fast and that means my chickens will be coming soon after! I'm very excited but also nervous to have little baby chicks!

I will be looking to purchase some day old or very young chicks in February. If anyone plans on having some at that time, please let me know. I am interested in hens that are decent layers, friendly, and cold hardy (love those big birds!). I only am getting four (boo, hiss, and disbelief, I know!:p) and I need to have an exit strategy in case we get a surprise roo.

Welcome back! I forget who you live near but you can check out the map and look for someone close to you who hatches year round (there are plenty of us). I've never been able to master the whole e-bay thing. How is it going for you? Are you selling your own stuff...or buying, then selling?

Yes, the deer are more active, but I believe hunting season also has them stirred up and In unfamiliar territories.

Thank you.... I a hoping her and the other hens mature with just a bit more size, will have to give them another couple of months to see. I prefer larger hens since my flock is directed at being dual purpose. But if I can get a dual purpose hen who looks like her I will be very happy. The other 4 I have are nearly identical.

Yes, the branches seem to be a big hit with our birds. The run is pretty big, but the branches and logs we have scattered around in it are usually where you find the birds through the day if they are in it. The small structure in the left of the pictures is what we call the 'condos'. It was a 4x4 quail hut my mom had quit using years ago and wanted rid of. It had been all one open box inside but we modified it by dividing it with a floor halfway up it's height and adding extra windows and the second story pop door. We then ran a scrap deck plank from the 2nd floor pop door to the large pine stump we had left I the run. There is a roost bar in each level but otherwise it just has deep straw to burrow into. No chickens live in it, it is just available as a 'hangout' during the day. The birds use it quite a bit, especially the youngsters, apparently it makes a good club house. The hens like the top floor for egg laying also. Luckily we added an access door on the top back side also for easy human access.

I am in Bucks County. The ebay thing is going very well, thank you! I found some great deals on cosmetic items and have reselling them. Also some odds and ends around the house. The only problem I have run into is that ebay limits your amount of items to sell for the first 90 days as kind of a trial period (which I understand). If any body wants a good deal on cosmetics, my seller name is fairornatrix.

I've heard some of you talk about buying chickens or eggs on ebay. How did it go?

Fisherlady, Love your set up, will be looking closer at those pics for ideas. good luck on finding good heritage cornish, I had no luck with chicks or eggs,,,,I have been told trhat eggs do not travel well with that breed..

even though your pie looks yummy, when you said chicken pie I was seeing chicken pot pie with hand rolled noodles ..

give hubby a hug for me, I have been there an know how much it means just to have them there to do the lifting of heavy items

When hubby said he wanted pot pie my only reference was the frozen pot pie I had eaten as a child (I think it was Swanson's?) It is funny how different areas or regions have the same name for different dishes. .. or the dishes are very similar but one major ingredient differs greatly area to area. I never have had it fixed with home made noodles, but would love to try that also. I just remembered the chicken , gravy and veggies of the little Swanson's pies so went with that as the idea, I just didn't want it as runny as I remembered the Swanson's to be. I will have to dig through some of the old church recipe books I have to see if the noodle version is in them to give it a try.
