Didn't mean anything bad by that MC....for me it is hard to believe that folks are that far removed from their food,,,,my hands have been in the dirt since I could crawl,,,,,,
but when I stop to think about it folks think I am the strange one because of these things.....learned a lesson a few years ago,,,,if you are gonna take something to work for a potluck and it does not have traditional meat in it,,,,,just keep hushed or lie and tell them it's hamburger.
Oh, I didn't take it bad! I am laughing myself! I really don't/didn't know much about my food! It really is funny that I didn't know that carrots, garlic and onions grew underground.
Now, if someone can explain how I am supposed to know whether a plant will vine or bush (like cucumbers!
) I will be a happy person. Otherwise, I will just be surprised as I usually am! Ha ha!

You are on the road to enlightenment..when one can laugh at one's own self...and that is why I am here, to help you grow...your garden. Oh, depending on what variety of cucumber you grow depends on whether you will have vines or bush...and then there is also trellising, but that is another lesson grasshopper....we still on for plant shopping in the finer weather, right?! hahaha...
...we don't have to much longer to wait..

Have a wonderful night all, have to put the birds to bed...-Danielle

Hi,
Is anyone using biochar on their garden soil?
If so, have you found it helps prevents weeds
at the beginning or anytime during the season?
Thanks,
Karen in Ligonier, PA . ( circa 31 degrees)

I haven't heard claims about it preventing weeds, and can't imagine how it would do that. There are only a few organic ways to prevent weeds, and the only thing that I would consider generally useful is mulching. The main downside of mulching is that you can't apply it early to prevent the first flush of weeds. I guess the cost can be a consideration too.
If you have enough area to leave some unused for part of the year, you should lookup "soil solarization". It won't totally prevent weeds, but can cut way back on the number of latent seeds in the soil.
We have done this for years, knew ash was good for soil, didn't know there was a fancy name for it now...hahaha..we have a burn " pit" we use to get rid of yard debris, and we also use it to have fires in the nicer weather...Good to know we have been doing the right thing! The soil in our garden is so good, going to have to take a pick this year..dark/rich/ lots of worms and very aerated.
Thank you for the links, very informative!-Danielle
