WOW! look what my dumb question got started on here today!
breeder vs hatchery and wow!
I have learned a lot reading your posts! thanks!
I have 4 hens and only one has layed eggs since sept about 4 to maybe 5 a week..............then with winter she paused and then restarted during the colder polar vortex time! who would have predicted that!
My other 3 would be old enough to start laying eggs around Thanksgiving time............yet only one has started laying and she also started cold December!
2 others have yet to contribute anything meaningful to the nest box!
I love them all..............am really looking forward to my first blue egg .....
so with this slowish time line...........I am content so it doesn't seem that "production" is a big concern for me.
On the other hand.........I would like all four to be laying more once it warms up..........no pressure ----no egg every day expectations.........but 4 hens laying 4 eggs a week would be cool.
I ordered new chicks because I thought those breeds would be fun..............I like the way they look and the greater egg color possibilities for the future.
I love my wyandottes-----------and think the Columbian Wyandotte looks neat.............
silver grey dorkins --------I have heard lay an interesting tinted color and have a nice personality generally
welsummers.............cold hearty and darker egg .........looks fun
Easter Eggers------blue eggs and I love the way my Esther looks ...............yet Easter eggers seem to have quite a variety of LOOKS>..............cant predict what this one will look like!
buff orphingtons............seem very loved by their owners...........cute----makes me smile to look at their pictures................
so brown, light white or tinted?, blue, dark brown..............nice combo of possible colors..............
and I then have reached ----or actually surpassed the total amount of chickens I can have in my little area.
Lastly-----I got my current hens at 6 wks of age................I really want to have the experience of raising some from chicks.
I am hoping by raising them from chicks they will be more connected to me..............
My current group has gotten more and more comfortable with me.........but they don't come to sit on my knee -----they allow me to catch them and hold them to put Vaseline on but I don't think they actually want to be picked up!
so----mine are pets and
I hope they will continue to lay eggs for more than 2 years but they don't have to lay every day or anything...........
I want them to be healthy and content................and I don't have a good end of their existence plan...............
.I have read about this............if its time I think I will need to take them to someone to help me with that...........or they may need to die of old age
When I read the craigs list post about "spent hens after one year" this seemed rather sad or short -------the owner only wants 1 year of eggs and then they are done..........doesn't really value or enjoy the hens just wants max eggs and get rid of em!
Well this is not what I am into............
I do understand the business sense around this............I just know I couldn't really do this............
