I used to keep mine in the basement but it was too damp down there & my feed kept getting moldy.
Silkie:
I haven't had mold problems, but I did step on the tail of a field mouse who got in.....he became a tasty morsel....

D:More chick pics! Hillary has been joined by 2 more hardy survivors. When I removed the 2 older ones, I pulled the shells and figure out what hatched. They are all a cross, splash Breda fowl roo over Barred Rock pullets. I was hoping this cross might be black sex links, but I'm pretty sure the splash diluted the black like the barring and both sexes look the same. Or else they are all girls, possible with a group of only 3.
Hillary is the darker one on the left, #2 is the lighter one in the center. Photo bombers are some week old Rhodebars.
#3, trying to be patient until I move her to the brooder with her friends.
thanks Stake for letting me know about the Columbian Wyandottes being cancelled at Pickering....................that's a bummer
I have come to really like my wyandottes! and I wanted some different types.
So now I can choose a different chick
I can add another blue/green egg...............or Easter Egger/ Ameracauna
go with Cuckoo marans for a second dark brown layer.........
or Barred Rock or Delaware?
At this time I have only one of each breed..........because I am liking getting to know the different typed of chickens and cant have too many
I want to avoid chickens with comb styles more susceptible to frost bite..........it just worries me and hurts me to imagine them getting all frostbitten.........that has got to hurt them...........and I may not be able to prevent it with Vaseline etc..........
so what do you think I should do?
I am pretty sure I cant go wrong with any of these choices......
do you think people are more interested in buying an assortment of colorful eggs or are afraid of the blue and dark brown?
I am thinking the dark brown and blue are extra special yet not everyone is familiar and may find it odd?

on the chicken side..
I lost my old freedom ranger girl this morning to what I call blow out,,,,,I have not seen her lay an egg for at least a year so I am not sure what happened there......but for a meat bird I can see say she had a long life....
also I have an abundance of eggs here,,,,sales have not been good,,,I am packaging one box to send to silkie tonight,,,I should have enough for a seccond box if anyone wants to try hatching some mixes,,,my pens are not seperated yet but for some of them I can take a guess as to what the mix will be,,,,for instance I have some white bresse laying, and there's only 2 roosters in that pen,,a bresse and an OE... heading to post office in the morning so speak up if interested....
really... be careful out there, the mud is just as slippy as the ice..

Nice to save the chicks....trying to remember back to your earlier post on incubating.....you've had chicks hatch 5-6 days late?
That would be me. My last staggered hatch lost power 4 times & dropped below 55°F at least twice. Batch 1 was 6 days late. Batch 2 was 4-5 days late & batch 3 was 3-5 days late. Had late babies last winter too with duckies going 8 days late.D: Nice to save the chicks....trying to remember back to your earlier post on incubating.....you've had chicks hatch 5-6 days late?More chick pics!
