More chick pics! Hillary has been joined by 2 more hardy survivors. When I removed the 2 older ones, I pulled the shells and figure out what hatched. They are all a cross, splash Breda fowl roo over Barred Rock pullets. I was hoping this cross might be black sex links, but I'm pretty sure the splash diluted the black like the barring and both sexes look the same. Or else they are all girls, possible with a group of only 3.

Hillary is the darker one on the left, #2 is the lighter one in the center. Photo bombers are some week old Rhodebars.

#3, trying to be patient until I move her to the brooder with her friends.

Nice to save the chicks....trying to remember back to your earlier post on incubating.....you've had chicks hatch 5-6 days late?

thanks Stake for letting me know about the Columbian Wyandottes being cancelled at Pickering....................that's a bummer

I have come to really like my wyandottes! and I wanted some different types.

So now I can choose a different chick

I can add another blue/green egg...............or Easter Egger/ Ameracauna

go with Cuckoo marans for a second dark brown layer.........

or Barred Rock or Delaware?

At this time I have only one of each breed..........because I am liking getting to know the different typed of chickens and cant have too many

I want to avoid chickens with comb styles more susceptible to frost bite..........it just worries me and hurts me to imagine them getting all frostbitten.........that has got to hurt them...........and I may not be able to prevent it with Vaseline etc..........

so what do you think I should do?

I am pretty sure I cant go wrong with any of these choices......

do you think people are more interested in buying an assortment of colorful eggs or are afraid of the blue and dark brown?

I am thinking the dark brown and blue are extra special yet not everyone is familiar and may find it odd?

I have an incubator coming in the mail! My bf bought me one online! It'll be my first time hatching! Does he know that is giving me more permission for more chickens?...lol. Ok I know its best to let the incubator run for a day or so before adding eggs, I want the temp to stay to 99.5 and humidity to 50% to day 18 then 65% the rest of the time, right? Is there anymore tips that I should know about? It's suppose to be here by next Tuesday and I can't wait!

Lisa:

I'd do two things....first, I'd go to Ideal's web site and see if there's any other chicks they have that you may want....if so call Pickering and ask if they are making other arrangements to get the Columbians,,,if not see if they can get you an alternate bird....

I have heard this but don't know if its true...combs and wattles that heal up from frostbite 'toughen up' and won't frostbite again....I dunno...

my two cents

depends on your market,,,,I have people that will only buy white or brown,,,,not to brown though.....

I have way to many city friends that believe everything they hear, so don't judge by that...

This seems like a good one for today.......anyone with me ?????

it wouldn't let me resize....

on the chicken side..

I lost my old freedom ranger girl this morning to what I call blow out,,,,,I have not seen her lay an egg for at least a year so I am not sure what happened there......but for a meat bird I can see say she had a long life....

also I have an abundance of eggs here,,,,sales have not been good,,,I am packaging one box to send to silkie tonight,,,I should have enough for a seccond box if anyone wants to try hatching some mixes,,,my pens are not seperated yet but for some of them I can take a guess as to what the mix will be,,,,for instance I have some white bresse laying, and there's only 2 roosters in that pen,,a bresse and an OE... heading to post office in the morning so speak up if interested....

really... be careful out there, the mud is just as slippy as the ice..

yeooers, I am in the radar red...high winds, heavy rain, and the lights have flickered a couple of times....(though all of the branches have already come down)....hope the remaining 6"+ of snow melts off before the next polar vortex.....

They were 2 -3 days late in hatching. Set them on a Monday evening, first one out on Thursday morning.

I helped 2 more out before I left for work this AM. The humidity was too low (not prepared for a hatch) and they got stuck. I report later how that worked out.

That would be me. My last staggered hatch lost power 4 times & dropped below 55°F at least twice. Batch 1 was 6 days late. Batch 2 was 4-5 days late & batch 3 was 3-5 days late. Had late babies last winter too with duckies going 8 days late.
