Awww you got the silkies. I agree with dheltzel, you will fall for them :)

what kind? I have my first 5 from my own pekins that were just ducklings themselves last year.
May I ask, how many ducks you have , the drake/hen ratio, how often they lay? do you set all of your eggs you collect? or do you save some for eating? How is your luck with hatching eggs? I feel like when I candle them I see nothing. Also if your not supposed to wash the eggs, (which I don't) then how are you supposed to see whats going on inside the egg? Mine are dirty so I can hardly tell if its a shadow..lol.

Sorry I'm new and love to hear from pros :)

I hope they enlarged the number screen. They need room for at least 2 more digits.

ETA: It should be called poultry math. Seems to me that chickens are a gateway bird. You get a few chickens, add a few ducks, multiply a couple geese, find the square root of 16 turkeys, times 24 quail by Pi and subtract the whole paycheck.

That being said, I ordered 60+ jumbo quail eggs. I will not be needing so many quail. If anyone is interested in any after they hatch, please be forewarned, some will be for sale.

I am considering quail!

at this time I have a lead for hatching eggs and a loaner incubator................time will tell if this all comes thru!...

I am wanting a jumbo coturnix quail ................one mail and several females................

I have a lead on some cages too..............and will add building quail cages for outdoors to my to do list! along with the square foot gardening etc........veggie planting and upgrading the chickens quarters............

I've had silkies, my money is on you keeping them all.

lol, I can only keep 2. My husband thinks they're "dumb looking" but might make some really cool crosses lol. I've already picked which 2 want to keep. "Cotton" is really outgoing and has REALLY fuzzy legs and "cloud is the only one that had a little Grey on her. PS Hubby just left for training and has NO clue I even got them yet lol

Hi, I finally got a bator, put in 20 some eggs, only had 1 egg fertile, we'll had my chick started hatching day before yesterday and it stopped not even halfway thru zipping. Made no more progress at all yesterday so last night I helped it, the membrane was really dry. it looks very good, except the yolk didn't absorb all the way, but he/she managed to kick the rest of shell off, it has been very active and moving around, how long until yolk could absorb or (so I have read) fall off?

I am no where near a pro.
My current flock consists of 8 chickens, a pair of black cayuga ducks and one male and 3 female ancona ducks. I would like to add a pair of turkeys and 2 more cayuga females this year.
I just built a coolerbator so I am hoping for a good hatch rate.
This year I plan to incubate most of my duck eggs.
To remove the dirty you can soak them in water for a couple minutes and then rinse them off. I wouldn't do much more than that.
