Funny how that chicken math works. I was holding strong at sticking with 6...then we purchased a bag of feed from the feed store and they throw in three free chicks with it. So, do I stick to my guns and stay at 6...or do we pick up three more in a month when they arrive at the feed store?? Decisions, decisions

I would say about 2 weeks, wings are fully feathered. Silkies go through a "ragamuffin" stage, where they are partially chick down and partially untamed adult silkie feathers. I can see why they are less visually appealing to uninformed buyers, but they are all going to hit this and then feather in the rest of the way to fluffy white adults.

Ok, I just got home from picking up my new SLWs and got them out to take their pictures and I noticed something wierd about this one. She has almost barring on her feathers. The only ones that look right are the ones on her shoulders. They both look identical in size and shape but the other one has jet black feathers with thin silvery lines down the middles. They also had barred rocks. Did I grab one of the wrong ones? It doesn't matter if I did I just want to know. Opinions? Oh and ignore my finger nails, my daughter painted them lol.

OMGAWD wing you have no idea some of the nasty messages I get when I suggest a cull and then even when asked how to cull it gets worse. I get so irritated and then to go so far as to message me? ughhhh A great example of why I dont help people anymore that post new help threads unless they come to me and ask! It shouldnt have to be that way, but I just cant figure out ppl, nor do I want to!
I often refer people to Mrs. Sunshine after telling them I don't have much luck with a particular problem or that I just cull them. I tell them if anyone would know how to help it would be her & I also tell them she will let them know if the outcome if likely to be bad too. I don't think I've ever had anyone get nasty with me for suggesting a cull if there was little or no hope.
BARGAIN ALERT !!! The TSC in Pottstown has older silkie bantam chicks for $1.00 each. They had about 30 of them when I was there an hour ago. The young ones are $2.99, but these, being older and (I guess) lacking some of the cuteness, are reduced for quick sale. Anyone interested in hatching with broody hens, this is your chance, buy a bunch and raise them. Sell the excess males cheap to wingstone (just don't ask their fate if you grew attached to them). My silkies go broody a lot, and often co-brood like fisher's wyndottes. Silkie hens are (IMO) the ultimate sweet, pet chicken. Other people must agree because they are always in demand.
bring them silkie roosters on over, but he is right, please do not expect happily ever after...not sure what folks think I do with all the roosters..
Hi all. We are new to chickens and we are having a blast with them! We are from central P.A. six chickens..so far

with you on that one,,,,,,I can not tell you how many messages I get, can you please take my mean rooster, then they get upset when told what will happen to them,,,,I try to be honest and tell everyone that very few of those roosters will stay.

I flat out tell everyone that extra or mean roos get eaten. I show them my meatbird pens & tell them extra roos join them.

MORE CHICKENS!!!!!

CC... have you decided what you are going to do with that pool yet ???

what are some others projects coming up.......It is always nice to get idea's from others

I checked into a new type of bird with the black skin (thanks dhetze )   I am on a waiting list and will probably not get any till next summer, so all black skin roosters are welcome to be dropped off..

I will also be seperating with a fence down thru the middle of the duck pen and a boar for the inside of the pen,   scovies will get half the pen and the rest will house the east indies and hopefully they can live peacefully with the khaki campbells..any suggestions there....

meaties are getting a new area that we will plant pasture with,,,not completely figured out yet but they get half the corn crib that is currently being used for breeding pens, we will cut an opening to allow them outside,,,,this is an area that things like corn do not grow well so hubby has no problem giving up the space..

I am sure I am forgetting something, I always have projects going...

1 more time... I set some eggs to check fertility, does anyone want whatever hatches,,,, free, you just need to pick them up...I will not be adding anything except what is already ordered,  we are keeping things simple till we find out what will happen with the property.....everything is being built on an easily movable plan, nothing will have any kind of foundation...

Probably end up as a hot tub for now, redneck style.

AaaaaaHA! I called it! When should we be there?

Too much going to start hydroponics, and I can always repurpose it later.

I agree. They turn out the same and you save on feed!

:( I went to my TSC today to sell my eggs and check out what they had. They had the older "ugly" silkies there and they were still charging $3 a piece for them :( Some didn't even have all the toes. I would have brought some home today if they were at $1 each lol even with the missing toes. I love silkies and they are so sweet.
