CC or silkie, I need more info on the turkey eggs, like how many, when, what breed.

really wish I could get over this driving thing, panic attacks behind the wheel are real bad....I have chicks that I still need to get here, and now piglets that need to get here, still looking for anyone that may be going into maryland in may......how about you CC, care for a joint venture into swine....

I need to also make some decisions,,,, hubby says if I really want the piggies, I have to sell some birds, his way of being sure that he will not end up taking care of them....

and also not sure where they will go, wonder how well pigs can live with messy ducks

I don't know about the smaller breed that you are getting... but the average bigger breeds would eat any chickens or ducks that move to slow near their pen. A friend of mine has a boy who raises 4H pigs each year, and he routinely finds feathers in the pens from slow moving birds.

Quote: we used to raise hogs, it was a farrowing operation, we had three boar (weighed at 800 ) and average of 100 sows, hence the reason , I want a small easily managed breed, I have been ran over and bones broken more times than I care to admit..

barn has sat empty (except all the junk in it ) for well over 15 years now..

there just seems something so wrong about seeing the two words 'empty' and 'barn' used together.... that just isn't right! therefore I think it needs to be filled to remove that vision from my head!

I don't have a vehicle to haul even small pugs, but the drive is no big deal. I've driven from here to Florida and back to north Carolina in one shoot ( with some stops but no sleep). Only drove 1400 miles in that 42 hour stretch. Southern Maryland is a quick trip. It's only like 2-3 hours each way.
I worked on that chicken crew years ago, used to drive to Indiana, PA and back with a 12 hour work day at least once a month.

Grandpap died last night.  There is high emotion right now.  My great aunt (his youngest daughter) is so upset that she didn't get to see him before he died.  She was looking for his DNR papers that Giesinger magically lost in his transfer.  By the time she was ready to leave the house (without the papers) it was almost 8pm and she goes to bed at 9pm to get up at 3am to do chores and go to work.

I know I am having issues functioning this morning.  On top of all of this, we keep losing water every day.  I have a cat having kittens behind me and she hasn't a clue what she's doing.  I had to deal with a chore that I have to do weekly for the elderly woman this morning.  I have had enough this morning.  I have been up since 5am and I still don't have my first coffee in me.

So sorry. . :hugs

Thankfully things with grandpap are going smoothly.
Everything else is not.

I have a small issue. Night, my cat who had 5 kittens this morning, has not dried them or herself. The placentas are still attached. Can I cut the cords? If so, how far from their stomachs? Do I need to do something to limit blood flow? Disinfect? I have no iodine but have triple antibiotic some place. I really have never had a cat this dumb about having babies.

ETA: Night lost a lot of weight during pregnancy. She was already a small cat - an Asian body type - and now her hips and back bone are sticking out. I am actually afraid she may not be able to nurse these kittens. She did bag up a little, but not a lot. I was going by that for when she was due. I knew it was soon, but she didn't really have enough milk - especially for 5 kittens!

BTW - Night is a blue calico. Looks like we have one orange, two blacks a blue tabby and either a black or blue calico.

Very sorry for the loss of your grandfather. For the kittens, get some dental floss or strong thread, Tie the umbilical cords off as close to the body as you can, this will stop any bleeding out. Cut them off with a very sharp scissors about an inch from the body and if you have iodine or betadine dip them after cutting. Triple antibiotic can't hurt. They should start to dry up in a day or two and will fall off in approx. a week. I've never done kittens, but I did do puppies and as far as I remember it's the same just smaller! You may need to look for KMR kitten milk replacer, this can also be sprinkled on mom's food to give her a little extra boost since she sounds quite debilitated.
PS...You can leave the floss/thread on until they are pretty well dried up, sometimes babies with their eyes still closed will find the umbilical stub and try to nurse on it thinking it is mom's, the tourniquet will keep this from causing problems.
