Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I have from 2 pens my new flock of golden laced wyandottes ( they might be mixed with blue laced wyandottes because the lady I got them from had a blue laced rooster with them as well). From my layer pen I have my golden laced wyandottes rooster and hens, my banty polish, barred rocks and cuckoo marans hens.

I read that if you have barred hens covered by a rooster other than a barred the chicks will be sexlink. We shall see what I get. It will be an interesting mix. lol Just really wanted to test out the incubator before I set some turkey eggs and pure golden laced wyandotte eggs.

Hoping to get some extra roosters to raise to eat since we missed out on the cornish x at the TSC lol.

**The turkey chick did not make it last night. This happens...for whatever reason sometimes, no matter what you try. The others are doing wonderful with Hen-Bree at the helm!! She is being a most-excellent momma!!

so glad about that, she has relieved us of a lot of "chick-managing"! (We now have 1-turkey & 2- cornishX...)

GM all:

From today's chicken news:

My #2 roo (and not quite a roo at 10mos) tried to cover my broody bc marans in the brooder box...more that once...I had to drag his butt out of the coop and he still tried again....geez he's a fudpucker.....

Seems my only Dork is not feeling well...she ignored scratch late yesterday and again this morning....she's sleeping under my table on my deck....she stopped laying after a fox attack a few weeks back, but the main Roo seems interested in covering her(and has) so, makes me think the issue is egg related....

I now have three birds doing the dominance dance...#2roo tried that with me and I threw my ball cap at him....he retreated under a bush promptly...

Chippy:

Good to hear you got your 'kids' to go to bed now without an incident.

Troyer:

Sorry you lost your main Roo....not only an anchor of your breeding but a fav too....

All was doing some of the math around raising meat birds, here's my math:
An adult heritage bird should have 4oz of pellets a day, if a 50lb bag cost $15 that's $.06/day and about $10 for 180 days....I would assume that even if meat birds grow quicker, they still need a certain amount of extra food to grow quicker...and heritage birds might not need a full 180 days....just wondering if any one has done the statistics on this?

Blarney,
Remember those birthday chicks, well they grew up and had chicks of their own, I have pics as soon as I am on the laptop instead of the tablet....first hatch was 2 black and 1 yellow

I do not think the turkey eggs will do anything, they look like an infertile egg would, but I trust the breeder that they came from,,,,, I wonder if the xray machine didn't get them......

Gonna need another batch of midget white turkeys.

I wanted to thank you all for pointing me towards wingstone for processing- she was an amazing teacher, patient, and even answered all my lame newbie questions. I couldn't thank her enough... now she's got me thinking about searching for some good meat birds :weee

Wish I could have stayed at wings until you got there, but I had a busy day! would have liked to meet you. Wing has a nice setup and likes to educate.

Wing, thanks for the Bob. Didn't check him this morning yet. Hope your hubby finds time to plant the taters.

Guys there weren't any fights tonight!!!! The rooster was the agressor at bed time so he went in time out. It was only a small scuffle.

When are you guys planting your vegetables outside? I was thinking strawberries tomorrow?

My strawberries went in a few wells ago. Peas are up, carrots, cabbage, bets, potatoes all in and some up. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers probably in next week or two, beans and corn scattered over the next month and a half.

Some things I put in early.

Cherries and pears are in blossom, apples just starting to blossom.

Spring has spring!
