Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I finally figured out which one is Bridget and which one is Serena. Serena has a black rim around the beginning of her beak, Bridget does not. Also, now that they are getting their big girl feathers in, Bridget has a lot more white on her head and breast. Still have trouble when they are head down and facing away, but at least now I know what to look for. Still don't know why they are 2/3 the size of the other girls.

We have a number of them who look too much alike to tell apart, even as adults. We make sure they are banded differently, either with different colors, or one on left leg, one on right... that helps us keep track and when it comes to any needs for special attention it makes it even more important.

My 13 are all exactly the same i tried to name them all but i couldn't tell which was which so i just gave up ahah. My broody hasnt moved since monday, ive got food and water right beside her, but im not sure id shes eating or drinking anything, hmmmm :/
So i have continued with my coop, and i have got the most off the actual coop built just need to put on the roof and bottom and add wire to the run, i also have to make the door for the nesting boxes,

is there anyway to tame a duck, please share if this is possible!   I would love to tame a set for once instead of nut cases!

Never had ducks, but the ones across the street follow her around in the yard and can be herded like sheep. They go out in the field to play in water puddles then come back to their pen. Maybe it depends on breed?

yea Idk, the ancona were skitsy too

My annies wander around my yard all day nibbling grass & eating bugs. In the evening all we have to do is walk toward them & they head for their pen to be locked down. A lot of times they are already in the pen when we go out & we just have to tell them to go to bed to get them to walk in the coop & shut the door. My calls are in the chicken/turkey pen, so they usually put themselves to bed even before the chickens & turkeys head in.

Here's a cuteness spam for you guys on this gorgeous Tuesday :)

My nameless roo. Sooooo nice to the girls and me. :)

Talk about cuteness overload! No girlfriend for your call yet... Have you checked out the PoultryShowCentral web site? I think it lists swaps as well as shows.

That's actually where I got them! I'm going on the 18th for a girlfriend :)

did u have to train them to go in? I threw cracked corn in the duck house and they went in. but at first it was a pain. I just wish they were more friendly and now so scared of us.

Is this LMPs pantry?  Looks like something she'd whip up.

Yes, Stake and I went to the same High School, but I believe the teachers he had were retired by the time I got there.  :hide   I think they sold his abacus by then too.

:lau

My personal experience is that the only way to keep down the stink of ducks is to sell them or give them away.  AND, it works.  Every Time.

Mine DO!!  So funny that you asked this, yesterday DS put a cadbury egg in the egg basket and then gave the 10 year old chores to do including sorting out the eggs (the cadbury was the reward).  If only they always got along so well!

I have fond memories of being allowed to 'throw down' cards for my older brothers when they played spades.  I was also taught how to pump a keg and top off a beer with little to no head at an early age.  I most likely served a beer or two to Stake.

I prefer my ducks stuffed...or baked.  But since you seem to want the pooping kind, check out Sally Sunshine, she has some great info.

Hello and Welcome!  Can't see really well from this pic, but I'd say a 7 month old RSL should be laying and the comb and wattles look like perhaps they are.  I see that they're free ranging, have you checked eery nook and cranny in your free range area?  Perhaps there's a gold mine of eggs out there somewhere.  You could also google 'egg production bleaching' to see how to calculate a hens egg production by the coloring in legs, eye ring, vent ect.  Distance between pelvic bones is a good indicator too, although both of these may be difficult for a novice, I'd start by having a good ole Easter Egg Hunt in your yard, you may be surprised.

THANK YOU for the reply. The girls are kept in a coop most of the time, only free range a few hours a day, within a confined section of the yard. There are NO eggs in that house or in that yard. Darn it!

They also poop in their egg box despite their roost being higher, albeit slightly. *sigh* I feel like they're happy and yet I'm failing. Yummy scraps daily, lots of bugs and greens... Fresh water, no poo in the house.

What more could they need?! ;)

Blarneyeggs was kind enough to send me 13 eggs for my friends classroom to hatch. They get white eggs from 4H but none of the students believed her when she told them eggs come in different sizes and colors. So far 4 of blarneys eggs hatched. 2 were lost due to cracking. The students are in awe! Thank you again! It has been such a wonderful experience for them. Here are a few pic that she sent me. Any guess on the breed?

Hey:

More tales of weird chicken behaviors....my two marans have always been a bit of a handful...as youngsters they tag teamed a number of the bigger girls...they've always layed in the same box and I've seen them a few time laying in the box on top of eachother.....well, today the broody was off the nest for a break and the other marans was in the box....about an hour later maran #2 left the box and there's 6 eggs in the box...(I only put three in there) well broody went back to work when #2 left the box.....seems weird to me....

Wow, you kids have been busy...86 posts later

**FisherLady- Good luck with the bear issue!! Be careful out there!! We have a lot of bear in our area, one of the best places to hunt in the state. Most of the time you don't even know they are there. The biggest surprises are the ones in the back yard, the dogs find to roll-in!!

...That has to be one of the fowlest smells there is...gotta wonder what the heck they were eating to make it smell THAT bad!! And why in the world dogs absolutely LOVE to "be-one" with that is just mind blowing!! ...nasty!
Have some pics of my most awesome-crazy broody "Hen-Bree" and her little crew. It was so beautiful yesterday, they went out for the first time. It is so much fun to watch them, it has been awhile since we had the pleasure of seeing chicks in the yard.
