Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I think I've gone into withdrawal lol. I haven't been home since Friday afternoon and I'm missing my fuzzy butts! I hope they didn't forget me since then. We're on our way home now but still have a couple hours to go.

Thew a rag over her head? I haven't heard of this maneuver before... Does it help? Your first broody hatch, how exciting!! sounds like you're doing everything just right. One thing I try to be careful of with a first time broody is when she's hatching, keep an eye out that she doesn't leave zipped eggs behind to care for the first few hatched. Also..candle those eggs, I had a friend try out the Giant eggs that were marked fertile and had a zero hatch, you don't want her to brood the whole 21 days and then not hatch. If you need fertile eggs, I am happy to help you out there. I'm very familiar with Swarthmore and go that way often.
Worked while I kept her head covered. Can't peck what you can't see, right?

Per your suggestion, I decided to candle them. We stuck a toilet paper tube on the end of an LED bulb with some gaff tape, and did a old-timey dark room setup. (Which is to say, stuck the egg on the tube, threw a coat over our heads, and hoped for the best.)

Here are the candling pictures. Brown-shelled eggs, so they weren't that simple to do; and to be honest I'm not at all sure what I'm looking for. None of them looked like they do on the web! Does any of this look good?

hmmm.... what day are you on? I'm afraid those don't look good. :( Sorry. If you could get some closer pictures (I know, it's really hard) it'd be a little easier for us to tell. Here's a picture from one of my batches on Day 4 a few month ago.

I'm not an expert candler, but I've started candling many eggs before they go into the incubator, to check that the air cell is up mostly. That has made me familiar with how a "clear" (undeveloped) egg looks, and any that stay that way past a week in the incubator I know are not developing and can be removed.

Those pics look undeveloped to me, so if the eggs are more than a week old, you might as well toss them and get some others.
