Hi Y'all!

Does anyone have interesting hatching eggs available close to Lititz? I have a hen ready to set. I would like to set her next week. I probably won't hatch any more than 12. (And really, I can't drive very far - super busy at the moment.)

Looking especially for kid-friendly varieties who lay well. My children would love some white egg-layers so we have white eggs to dye next year for Easter! Also hoping for some blue eggs. (I tried hatching Amerucanas last year but they all ended up being roosters, whom we rehomed.) I wouldn't mind brown as long as they are good layers and friendly.

Currently I have all 2 year olds. 2 black austrolopes who make great mamas and 2 Stars (Red and Black) who are my best layers.

Sadly I need to get rid of my 2 buff orpingtons because they don't lay well any more, but I'm not quite sure what to do with them. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

:) Jen
I would suggest taking them to an auction close to you. I just went to the Middleburg auction and sold 7 of my chickens and made a couple of dollars :p

Hi there from Chester County. How many chickens do you have in your flock? I'm up to 3 now. It's my first year and everything is new to me but I'm loving it.

Argh, trying to put chicken wire around the top half of the run. How do you people work with this stuff! It's impossibly uncooperative!

What are you using to build the run? I've had almost no luck with chicken wire on T-posts and U-posts. When stapled to a rigid wooden frame however, it's pretty simple to work with.

Homemade noodles is just egg and floor, I believe. I cup flour and one large egg if I remember correctly. No, that's rivels, basically the same thing.

Just add a little salt & a dab of water for noodles.

Welcome to the fun!

Annie:

I had trouble keeping my girls in the backyard until the Roo showed up....more than once, I had to run around the neighborhood chasing chickens...I also clipped their wings....

I would love a roo, but we absolutely can't have one in the burbs here. I will be clipping the leghorns wings soon!

We have talked about doing this if/when our garden starts producing. I just need to find out where to get a Pepsi plant.

Finally done with packing all the birds I processed Monday. 9 nice fat broilers, 1 spare roo from the layer pen, 5 scrawny boys someone pawned off on me & I had to fatten up for a month before butchering...still scrawny! Packed the 4 banties, 2 banty/lf crosses & my spare roo whole. Did 3 whole breasts with ribs, the rest of the broilers went in pieces...leg/thighs, breast filets & wings all separate in packs of 2-3 depending on size. Also boiled down the stripped carcases & put 5 bags of broth in the freezer. Most of the meat got brined before packing except the 3 breast sections. I also have in excess of 10 dozen eggs in the freezer in packs of 6, 9 & 12. We like scrambled eggs year round...not just when the girls feel like handing them over.

How do you frees your eggs? Do they taste the same?

I use my vac sealer to bag them but just press the air out by hand & seal instead of using the vacuum part. They look like little balls of sunshine in a bag. (Crack eggs into bag. Don't freeze in shells.) ;)

Interesting and good layers? A lot of really interesting birds aren't great layers and a lot of great layers aren't that interesting.

For interesting, I can probably have a dozen Swedish flower hen eggs by next weekend easy. Fair to good layers, light tan egg, interesting looking lawn ornaments and pretty friendly. Mine survived the winter with open windows in the coop, a lot.

Hey Jen, I'm in Lititz too! I am no where near the point you're at in "chicken growing", but I wanted to share a little knowledge I've gleened with you. There's a thread I stumbled on when trying to figure out how to get my girls laying for me; https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/608787/feeding-chickens-black-pepper. The members posting there seem to have had success... I have yet to have success myself, but I only brought my girl's home last Friday. We bought them at The Green Dragon small animal auction, which is held every Friday at 6pm. This is also an alternative for you if you must get rid of your BO's... we paid $17 for 2 of our girls and $17.50 for the other 2. We have adult RSL's, however I noticed the adult BSL's and BO's went for a little more and I think outside of chicks, pullets, roos and Bantams, that was all they had in the way of hens that night.

Maybe this helps and maybe it doesn't, but thought I'd at least share with a neighbor lol. Good Luck!!
