Hello, everyone! It's been ages since I've posted on here. I had to get rid of all my chickens and turkeys a few years ago. I got carried away, and got in trouble with the neighbors and code enforcement officer.

I've been having problems lately, and my husband told me I can get 3 or 4 hens again. It was his idea, to help cheer me up. Plus, he loved having the fresh eggs.

Sooo, I'm now on the hunt for a few pullets. I loved my naked necks and EEs and RIRs. I really missed them!

Where do you live? And what age are you looking for? Sorry to hear you are having troubles...I really feel like my chickens have helped pull me out of a lifetime depression more than anything else has ever had. I'm happier now than I've ever been and chickens has been the reason. Lame, maybe, but true :)

Hi
frow.gif
and welcome back, even though I'm new so I wouldn't know you from before lol! Sorry to hear about your loss, but very glad to hear of your return! We've only had chickens for 8 days (but got our 1st egg today... it's a GOOD day), but I am loving it. We've had a few road blocks over the past week and DH was ready to give up already (that's him for ya

), so that egg today was an omen of things to come an just in the nick of time! I can't even tell you how may hours I've spent in and beside the run just talking to and watching my girls, there really isn't anything quite like it!!

I can't help you with the pullets, I have "auction RSL's" that are probably past their prime, but it's a start

Griggy, see above lol! I am in complete agreement with you, it's like a little bit (or a LOT) of therapy in your own back yard! Times have been rough for me personally for awhile now, the family too, but as I've been told so often over the years "if you don't take care of yourself, you can't take care of any one else." I could never really figure out just how to do that, then last year I had a full garden for the 1st time ever and LOVED it, but something was missing. Now I have the garden AND the girls, so between working in the dirt and caring for (and talking to and being entertained by) the girls, it feels like it has all come together... and that 1st egg today really was validation for my direction so to speak!

Thanks to both of you for sharing, it allowed me the opportunity to share a part of this process that I was not very comfortable sharing initially... much love for my chicken peeps

**Wing- You had mentioned you love pasta... Have you ever had couscous? It is a tiny pasta ball, kinda reminds you of rice, you can make casseroles or salads with that. Also, the super food- Quinoa is great!! it has everything in it and it is not processed..it is what it is. It is good hot or cold...I have a few recipes I make with that if you would be interested..or anyone else for that matter.

Hen-Bree is doing a great job raising the turkey & meaty chicks. I wanted to give her some egg shell..then the chicks started to eat it too. i am not sure if they will keep eating it. Is this an issue I should be concerned about? How do those of you that have broodies raising chicks handle getting them their calcium? Some say they can't eat any..some say it doesn't matter..would like to know what you all think

....Thank you-Danielle

Not sure which one of those it was that I picked up and put back, to pricey..

I think I did good today, eggs for breakfast and grilled chicken for dinner with grilled apple rings, wanted to put brown sugar on the apple but I only put it on hubby's

Until she starts laying again, she doesn't need the extra calcium. I would withhold it for a while and let her eat the starter the chicks eat.

Not to sound morbid... but I think the Calcium precautions are due to organ damage that affects the longevity of the chicks (not sure on turkey though) If you are planning to butcher them still it probably won't have any noticeable affect.
But with that being said, I agree with Dheltzel...if there isn't a specific reason for her to have a calcium supplement right now then I wouldn't worry about giving it to her yet.

OK... I am on another egg search, though this time it is not for me, but I have been requested to find some eggs for a relative of a good friend. Apparently this lady is trying to find Americauna eggs (they are the blue egg layer, right?)

So... does anyone here have Americauna eggs or know someone who does so that I can help her make a connection to get her eggs?
