CC, iI got duck eggs from your neighbor today, I am gonna go ahead and set them tomorrow, did the one's that you set hatch, just so I have a clue what to expect....

They developed, but didn't hatch. They were in during my incubator issues. I have no doubt they will hatch, I never did ducks before.

The drakes do their job. I've seen it, lol. They will be mixed, but all look to be good sized. Actually I think they might be good for your purposes, hybrid vigor.

I found a local person with bourbon reds! Yeah! Now I hour he gets some hatched! A lot later in the year than I wanted, but it will do.

I processed one of his problem boys yesterday, it turned out to be a good bird for roasting...if all his ducks are like that one, they will surely meet my needs, I think the one yesterday was a welsh harlequin...
Didn't get as clean as I wanted but he seemed happy with it.......ducks can be a pain to clean, I need a lot more practice with them.

Good luck on turkey, not to many local one's right now, even root's doesn't have the numbers they usually do, may go get a box of BBW, if I can get only a couple, they usually go in boxes of a dozen...

Speaking of turkeys how far along are the Beltsville eggs you got? Have you candled?

I put 7 1/2 bags of pine bark nuggets in my run yesterday. I spread them out 1-2 inches thick. They spell good, look nice and NO mud anymore. The girls seem to like them. They kept pecking and scratching, in fact more than they did before I put them down.

wow that's a lot of pine nuggets!

My dad and I are brainstorming a cover for part of the permanent run for rain and snow issues......

Hey Annie: I always keep food and water available in the runs. Mine free range the backyard and show a preference for bugs and grass....so, only sometimes do they come back to the food bowl for a feast..(then a nap).....and they all get a bit of scratch in the morning and the evening...
Thanks, I leave feed out in the run all day too. I love how they nap! So cute! It's amazing how well they disappear too...
AnneInTheBurbs: My girls free-range also. I always leave food in the coop and water for a few reasons: 1. I never want my girls to go hungry and possibly peck at each other out of hunger. 2. I might be delayed in the morning getting to them because I work full-time from home and can have some very early online meetings. 3. If there is some kind of emergency and I have to leave, at least they have food until someone can get to them.
Those are some excellent points!
Somerset county!
After my experience with my broody hen, I really wanted to try to incubate some eggs myself. I asked my husband, who can build anything, to make an incubator for me. He said that he would, but before we spent the money on supplies he said I should borrow an incubator and try a hatch to see if 1) I liked doing it and 2) If I was any good at it. If it turned out well, he would build an incubator for me. Well guess who is getting an incubator?!? :ya
Congrats! On your hatch and your future bator!
GM folks: Today was the day to de-weed the garden....well, I left the gate open yesterday and the chooks had a feast......time to re-seed,,,,,
Stake, I have reseeded more than once. I think I finally have an effective fence set up. :fl

I have been letting the girls free range while I am outside reading or gardening................

well they are of course loving it.

I have made some decisions about which gardens I am okay with them scratching around it but there are a few important flowers I don't want them to ruin.............so I put up a low wire garden fence I had in the shed in hopes they might just turn away and go to the other more readily available stuff...........

instead they found a way to get stuck in the garden behind the fence therefore forcing them to only work with what they had...!!! oh my my

QUESTION:
have you heard your chickens make this sort of growling or chortling sound?

I was watching and listening to them .............and I think it was similar to purring..........as one was fully enjoying a deep dust bath?

then in another situation.........one was sunning herself............I wasn't sure if she was blissfully soaking up the rays.............or distressed because she didn't want to run to the nest to lay an egg and wanted to lie in the sun instead...............maybe feeling body cues saying egg is imminent?

any thoughts on these kinds of sounds?

none seemed directed at me or aggressive in any way...........so I think growling seems like the wrong word.............but honestly I don't have a word for it!

that is a lot of bags...glad you don't have the mud, but just a concerning word...be-careful with the "bagged" mulch..sometimes the mulch was made with "sprayed" trees/verge....always check the bags for their source if you can. I wouldn't want any birds to be exposed to potential hazards. JMO...
