Ok . I was starting to think there was something wrong with my EE. I got my first green egg on Thursday and then hadn't had one since. But she just laid one again at 3:30 so I'm not worried anymore lol. This time she did it in the nest box. Poor girl wad in and out of a couple of them before she committed to one and then when she was done, was panting like crazy. Must've been hard and confusing for her. In other news, I Bellerive I've found a home for my extra roo Lou. My parent's neighbors have chickens and I asked them the other day if they wanted a rooster and they said sure :) so I'm taking him down today. He won't be as spoiled as he was here though :/ but at least I'll get to go see him every now and then.

Lou is at his new home now and even though I've been preparing myself for this for a couple weeks I cried. Didn't help that before I walked him over, I had him out petting him and talking to him and he laid his head on my chest and crowed. I'm going to miss that big lovable guy :( I just hope he's happy there.

It sure beats some of the "alternative endings" . . .

My run is a muddy (poopy) mess with all this rain. On saturday we came home and there was at least 2 inches of water in the run. We have a roof over it but the rain was so heavy and coming in sideways that it filled it up like a pool. Even with changing the nesting boxes as often as I can the eggs have been filthy and covered with mud and poop. I'm afraid to use them so I cooked them and fed them back to the birds. A guy down the street sells hay. Can I use that in the run and nest boxes until the weather improves. It's cheaper than the wood chips. I've been searching Craigslist for a wood chipper. We have an endless supply of branches and pine trees I can turn into wood chips. My hubby said he will put a french drain in front of the coop (its at the bottom of a hill) but that won't be for awhile. What do you all do to keep your run dry and coop clean?

Hey Stake, how did the girls make out today?

Hey FF:

The silkies are still in a scrum in the corner of the pen....the Americuna and CCL have roosted in the coop with the Lavs...the Rodes haven't made up their mind on the coop or roosting with the Brown Leghorns ontop of the old coop.....

Your chooks are the friendliest I have ever met...everytime I go near the pen they whine at me for a pet...I ended up surrounded by chooks waiting their turn for a belly rub....the only guys having a bit of a hard time are the silkies....they are just so small that need a bit more space where they can get away from the big girls....(BTW, Happy was hanging under one of the LAVs when getting a drink....wish I had a camera).

Sounds like they are making themselves at home with you! Is the CCL ok? I was a little worried about her being so sad. She's a loving little girl.
It was very quiet in my backyard today, nothing worse than a silent coop...

I have used fine gravel chips... just use a piece of treated lumber around the base of the fencing and then fill with about 2" (maybe more depending on how soft your ground is). The gravel may sink in at first, but should provide a clean top layer.
If your run is really boggy you will need to do an initial 2" layer of a small to medium sized gravel and pack that in, then use the fine chips on top.
