Is anyone interested in any hens? I am hatching out eggs and will be keeping the roosters for meat, I'll have to do the same to the hens if I can't sell them. They will be SS. SS/RSL SS/Leghorn.

I just needed to share that today, we have away our first "extra" dozen eggs :) I sent the kids over to the neighbor's house with them (since my flock often hangs out their yard) and they came back with a stack of empty cartons. Apparently they've been waiting for it lol.

now gets an odd question...would it be possible to house a bunny with the chickens? I know that sounds so wierd but almost every day, I take the Oreo out to the run to play with the chickens for a while. They follow her around and she runs and jumps all excited.

We also brought the kitten inside to be around more of a normal house life than isolated in the garage. He's still in a crate obviously but at least he's not completely alone. My only concern is my psychotic husky *eye roll*.

In my experience I have never had success housing rabbits in the same pen with chickens. The rabbits would eventually end up dying of some sort of disease or they would pester and chase the chickens to the point where the chickens no longer produced like they should have. I never tried keeping the rabbits in cages in the chicken pen, so that might be an option.

A vinegar with mother question....was talking with FlowerFairey on a visit and she mentioned adding Vinegar with mother to white vinegar and getting it to turn store bought vinegar to the with mother type....anybody know anything about this???

Aura:

Kittens can be 're-habilitated', if the kitten is over 8mos, its will probably always be feral....it the kitten can smack the pooch on the nose a couple of times things will be OK if the kitten runs the dog will chase...(and keep on chasing)....since you already have a cat, your pooch may know the limits....my two cents....

I am very disappointed in my potato tower yield!

I dumped it over and its only 6 big potatoes and 6 baby new potatoes.

Considering I put in some starter potatoes...........that is like virtually NO yield!

I am glad they are not rotted.........or have any pests that I can see

I think the problem is that the plants got leggy and then we had some rain and wind etc and the leggy plants got knocked over. I made a cylindrical tower using chicken wire and put straw around the edges and soil in the middle. When the plants poked out the sides I was a bit unsure what to do since as you add dirt............I felt the stems of the plant would get covered and make more shoots and grow potatoes.

But if the stems are on the outside...........you cant cover them
and if they are leggy and get knocked over with rain or wind...........

So I want to get more potatoes.................I am thinking of using a rubbermade rectangular container I had made that I drilled holes in all around to contain compost.

Since the sides are solid and there are some ventilation holes do you think this will work?

I know people grow them in trash cans............

Maybe I need to add something to the soil?

I need dhetzel to chime in please! I know he would know what to do!

we had a buck dwarf rabbit that loved hanging out with the chickens, course he could go in and out of the pens whenever he wanted, which he did, he would visit every yard and go in with them, he only took a dislike to one rooster and they would fight until the rooster would give in and run, with hippy hop right behind him to teach him a lesson i guess, i used to love watching them til hippy hop disappeared, maybe an owl.
