I'm so sad

I left my guard down today and one of my hens got killed by a hawk. I feel really really guilty. She was one of my favorites and not just one of the other chickens whom I don't grow attached to. She was just dust bathing outside and I look out the window, and find a hawk on top of her body eating her

Here's the Coopers Hawk that killed her...

Be careful everyone because raptor kills are higher at this time of the year since they're migrating south. Most of the songbirds have left already so raptors will catch what they can find on their way down. I thought she was safe out in my yard as I was outside often. But she wasn't. They seem pretty bold and determined.

My husband and I were just talking about this. We let our chickens free range our field daily. I am so worried about hawks gettign to our girls. Our rooster scared most of them away I think but that only goes so far. We are going to be building a huge run for them. So sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear of your lose....I've lost some chicks to hawks, never a big girl....the smaller hawks and falcons can sneak in closer than the red tails...my senior roo is hawk savy at this point and the junior roo will learn this fall...Troyer has some tough roos maybe he could part with one?

I am on the 'glide path' for hawk migrations....the only thing you can do is set up protected areas for the chooks to hide under ....thickets of english laurel, holly etc and give you chooks a place to hide under when hawks fly over....until you can get thickets set up, ...cut a 2x4x8 into four legs...and attach to a 4x8 piece of ply wood ...hope this helps

I'm so sorry for your loss. I feel your pain and Heartbreak :( thank you for the warning though, as this is our first year with chickens. I'll be keeping a closer eye on mine as the free range.

They usually crowd under the rabbit hutches or into the coop when something flies over. Our rooster will crow and I go out to check on them. I am hoping we get everything done by the end of the month. We jsut moved here not long ago so not sure how the hawks are. we only had1 predator problem. during the day. The day after one of our drakes went missing we saw a red fox in the farmers field so think thats what happened to him, or he just figured out how to fly and migrated with the rest of the ducks.
