I. Am. Not. Right. In. The. Head.
Saturday, I drove my daughter back down to her place in FL. Did most of the driving with her spelling me for a short bit. No stopping except for food and gas. Left there around 2:30 on Monday. Stopped for two short naps but other than that, just drove home. I am too tired to sleep now. But I got her stuff out of my garage and she gave me her old cat tree and an office chair. So, that was good. Husband took good care of my girls while i was gone.

Welcome back home! Glad you had a safe trip

I've had free range turkey before from our Growers Market. It tasted NOTHING like we had last night. This turkey was amazing - although only a 32AA.

. And the dark meat was so dark, it looked like beef. YUM! I swore we would never raise turkeys again, but now I know this is something we need to do every year.

That's what our guy looked like before we put him in the oven! My MIL made a store bought turkey and I made ours and the plate with our home grown turkey was empty! First time we've ever had turkey that we raised, butchered and cooked. Planning another for Christmas! So tasty.

Did he come back today?

Thanks for the warning... Not much of an issue around here though.

I need eggs for my broody, I feel bad making her wait another 2-3 weeks until I see Wing. But to drive an hour or so seems a bit of a starch to find 3 fertile eggs....Maybe I should check CL.

Anne:

Nope, I suspect he became a snack for a hawk....I've lost a few little ones to hawks...in fact yesterday there was some small rapture eating a sparrow in my front tree....I watched him pluck the down and chow down

So sorry :( That really really is sad.

I told dh that I am grabbing the incubator when we get through the house Wednesday.

:lau That's too funny!

Ok everyone, I'm thinking turkeys next! What breeds do you recommend (these would be for thanksgiving and Christmas next year) and would anyone have poults or hatching eggs around Jan/feb? Give me some advice on them please. Can I raise them in with the chickens, do they need their own coop, can they free range? I hear they're dumb lol. What special stuff would I need to do for them. Thanks!

We have slate blues and plan on hatching some more eggs come spring. We sold a jake and 2 jennies two weeks ago. We also had one of the larger males from our spring hatch for Thanksgiving (it was delicious.) We are planning on reducing the flock a little more (another for Christmas dinner) and possibly selling a few more.

We keep ours with our chickens and 2 ducks and have no problems. We let them out during the day as much as possible to free range and as soon as dusk hits they are right back in the coop. Our group has had contact since coming out of their shells. They will come right on the front porch if we are outside and eat right out of our hands. Very good with my daughter and around our dog.

We were told slate blues were hard to hatch and raise so we set a pile of eggs and had a great hatch. They grew super quick. A few of the first hatched males are bigger than their dad (he was the runt when we picked him out.)

The slate blues are a Heritage breed and are on the watch/threatened list.

Sounds awesome! Are jakes and jennies the real names for different genders? I definitely want to raise Turkeys one day when we have more property. Gross question though: Do Turkeys, being much larger than chickens have much bigger poops? Strange minds want to know....:hide

Looking like a rooster with the streamers, I only ever had one hen that developed them.
And not much difference between bunnies and chicks except momma bunnny does most of the work.

:( I won't give up until the fat lady sings (or the rooster crows)...

Be jealous everyone, we are going to Shady Maple on Thursday for Hubby's belated birthday.

Mind you, I'm already trying to find an excuse to see Wing (since I'll be just around the corner). and get some fertile eggs for my poor broody girl.

Yes they do. Muscovy ducks have huge poops too. My hubby thinks my chickens must be part horse since they make big poops lol

Turkeys have much bigger poops but I agree our muscovey ducks poo like people. It's disturbing how large they go.

My pap always told me boy turkeys are jakes until they breed, then their toms. Girls are jennies. I've always referred to them that way. Could be wrong but it's a childhood memory I cherish from before he sold his farm.
