my wyandotes are energetic about coming for some scratch and will mill around under foot,,,,but get skidish when you try to pet them..my two cents...
do you find your wyandottes to be good foragers?...mine really like to search around scratch and dig..big holes

...Cordon was great teaching the marans how to search for food.

my wyandottes DO like to make big holes to dust bathe in...................and the two I have...................which is not that many for making assumptions across a breed................but the 2 I have are very different in their temperaments or personalities.

Sylvie------------is a very independent --------almost leader yet 2nd in rank( although she does not know it or care to take on #1) she is also a cross beak gal but healthy nontheless!

Goldie is one who hangs out on the periphery, all nonchalant and "i didnt do anything" look on her face..............basically hangs back and avoids any conflicts yet gets what she needs.............

They are cute as all my gals love to stay together and run in their silly way to catch up to each other when separated.

I enjoy their feather patterns!

the pencilled or partridge patterns would be nice and the columbian................

The hubby and I grew jerusalem artichokes the past 2 years. They taste delicious and have wonderful health benefits but there is a terrible side effect we couldn't eliminate no matter how we prepared them. If you do plant them, invest in some gas-x.

that is very good to know...I wonder why, what is "in" them to make them so ? ..will have to look-up..I am also wondering, do chickens suffer "side effects"?....
sounds like you are in the works for making the perfect winter hardy egg-layer!..would you post some pics once you have them were you want them..I would be very interested!:D

I think the ingredient you are having trouble with is inulin, which is the main carbohydrate in the Jersualem Artichokes. I believe it is the type of fiber they put on "fiber bars" and other items like cookies and such. Excessive consumption can produce some unpleasant effects, but I think it varies from person to person. JA's are supposed to be very good for diabetics because of this type of carbohydrate.

Thanks for your opinions in the Wyandottes, they do sound a bit like divas. It's hilarous, my SLW tries to 'stare down' and chase the dog away most days. The dog is just walking around, unaware that there is even a confrontation going on. :lau

Dheltzrl and Blarney, there's a thread on here regarding cuckoo and white Marans. The white is a recessive of the cuckoos, at least recessive out of the current genetics. When Marans first came to the U.S. I had a small flock of cuckoos but never had any hatch with much white beyond an occasional white tail feather. Lots of solid blacks though.

I didn't hatch for several years and ended up starting again with cuckoos from someone on BYC. Since then I've had birds that are mostly white with black neck feathers similar to Delawares or light brahmas.

Do your cuckoo marans lay eggs as dark as the black coppers? I've heard very few strains have the dark eggs? A dark egg laying strain would be a fantastic starting point for dark egg laying sex links or sex-linked Olive Eggers.

Thanks! I emailed them to see if they are still available. I drive by their town every work day, and we sure need cartons now.

Today I gathered 68 eggs! Not kidding about needing the cartons.
I think a few might have actually been laid on Monday, but 5 dozen a day is a very good thing. Of course I kept about 30 for hatching

Also, some of the kids playing in the hay in the barn found a nest with 16 eggs. I replaced them with a golf ball and will keep checking there for free range eggs.

I love showing off my birds, especially to people who never get to see them. Today, my daughter's friend from dance came up to our house to visit for the first time. Impressive since it's about a 40 minute drive but she and her mom have been wanting to come up to visit for a while to see the chickens. We were out there for a while and they were petting them and holding them and giving them treats. They absolutely loved them and thought they were so fascinating and sweet :) they love animals and her mom does a lot with dog rescue. They're actually vegetarian, they love animals so much. They do know that we raise them for meat, eggs, and company but that doesn't bother them. She told me once that she believes that anyone who eats meat should know the animal that they eat. Just wanted to share. I introduced some city friends to the joy of chickens :)

Excellent! It's always nice to pass on knowledge about our food. So many Americans are totally disconnected from their food supply.

My niece (the one I do the chickens with) is really into dance also.
