So I am a little north of Pittsburgh, and my lovely and courageous daughter is recovering from a serious illness. I want to take the leap into chicken ownership again. Once I get my coop and run, is there anyone nearby where I could buy some pullets? Doesn't really matter what breed, although my daughter thinks silkies are cute... I am thinking of 5 chickens to start (and I am going to resist chicken math). Of course, still have to convince hubby, but I guess I could be like Alaskan and hide the coop in the woods...

ok. I just walked in and got to see the first BCM pop out of the shell

I have the light off in there but they're in there peeping like crazy. I don't think they like the dark lol
They just peep like crazy without any reason. I think it keeps the hen motivated to sit tight on them. In "nature" it would be very dark (I assume, I have never tried to measure the ambient lighting under a hen).

They are doing fine and don't need food or water for another 2 days really.

When I put chicks in the brooder, I sprinkle food on the paper towels, but no water the first day. I had a chick drown before it got sure footed, so they all wait until they are up and moving well before I put in water. I have quail waterers that would be safe and I often start with those, out of an abundance of caution.

Wish I was closer, I definitely could get you some pullet chicks. No silkies now, but lots of good egg layers.

I'm near the Altoona area, about 2 1/2 hours from Pittsburgh. I'm probably further than you'd want to travel but I have a couple young pullets (and a couple extra cockerels) who aren't really going to fit in to any breeding plans if you'd like. A couple olive eggers, a SLW/Marans cross about 15 weeks old and a little, 9 week old wheaten Marans.

Thank you for all your replies,

It will probably not be until spring (seeing how much snow is on the ground) and I don't have a proper coop for them yet (although, the new shed has lots of space, hmmm). Also, my daughter is still in the hospital and probably will be for several weeks. She has asked for chickens for a long time and I think it would help her recovery to have something to look forward to.

Sorry for your daughter's illness, hopefully her recovery will go well and be speedy!

I am about 1.5 hours North of Pittsburgh, 13 miles from Punxsutawney. I don't breed for sexed chicks, and ours may have a bit of broody tendencies

but it isn't uncommon for us to have barnyard mixes which we sell at about 10 weeks old, sometimes younger when the broodies give them up earlier.

If you can't find specific breeds you are interested in when you are ready you can leave a message on here and I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. We are neighborly like that.
