I like the idea of a Dexter. I wonder how much milk a Belted Galloway produces...they are supposed to be dual purpose, perhaps they produce less milk than say a Jersey or Holstein.

I prefer Jersey milk actually, it's supposed to be better for you than the more modern breeds of cow (A1 vs A2 something)... I don't remember the specifics, but I do love the raw jersey milk we get from a little Mennonite farm outside of Kutztown (yes... on the opposite side of the state, we stock up and freeze 10 gallons whenever we come home to visit). that was/is the only milk I've ever cared for enough to drink straight in a glass, it's so good!

My belteds produce about 4 gallons a day I believe. My dexters produce about the same. Maybe a bit less.

Alrighty then! Even with the grandsons living here, and a 16 yr old son eating me out of house and home, that is WAY more milk than we use...

So I wake up these days with the sinking dread that I may have lost an animal due to the cold. I am especially worried about one of my pregnant does who does not like to sleep with the herd in the shelter. Haven't been out there yet today, I'm waiting for light.

I don't know. The acidity was enough to turn me off of it. I haven't noticed a problem with feeding them unfermented feed, so that's what I've been sticking with. Now, fodder, on the other hand... If I could get that stuff to grow without mold over winter, I'd be one happy camper. I'm sure they'd agree, lol. I'm so sick of WHITE!!!

Agreed a nice fodder system would be great. I'm not sick of white, just sick of the terrible cold.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm scared to open my coop this morning. Next year I will definitely have a better run set up for them as well. Newbie mistakes! I did learn that chicken math thing pretty quick though.

Agreed, its downright nasty out there....two minutes and my fingers were throbbing.....got the girls watered and fed....they are staying in the coops and do not look happy....in the big coop, they were getting into a scrum....giving lots of scratch....should've bought a bag of cracked corn for them......

How does sheep's milk taste in comparison to cow's? We are planning on getting a pair of goats eventually but I'm not a big fan of the 'goaty' flavor of goats milk. According to my sister the 'goaty' flavor intensifies the longer the milk sits, but even fresh I don't think it's something I'd enjoy drinking on it's own. A cow is too big an animal to even consider at this point, but we DO go through a lot of milk and actually go to great lengths to get good, raw milk. It would be great if there was a smaller, more easily managed animal that produced similar milk... I had never really heard of drinking sheep's milk before so I am wondering now how it compares.

You can taste a difference if you think about it. It's definitely creamier than cow milk. I made cornbread last night with it and nobody noticed, but I thought I could taste it. It's not like that goaty taste. I don't like goat milk (not even raw) because that goaty taste is horrible. Goat bucks smell bad too when they're in rut. REALLY bad. Rams don't smell good, it's almost enough to make me want to gag when I'm downwind of Jair, but nothing at all like a goat buck. Goat bucks, you hold your breath or you WILL be gagging. It's so bad that if you leave your goat buck near the milking does, it will make the milk taste bad...

On the other hand, when we made pudding, you couldn't tell. It was seriously the best pudding I've ever eaten in my life. I also put some in a creamer bottle before and forgot that I had done so. It had taken about a week before I realized that I was drinking the sheep milk in my coffee. I think most of it is honestly a mental thing... Sort of like eating lamb meat... If you don't know what you're consuming, you have no idea, but if you find out, suddenly that "best ___ EVER" has a funny after taste, lol.

Hi everyone !! Is anyone in the Dubois area looking for a rooster? Lucky is 18 weeks and starting to breed. But we already have a rooster so we can't keep him. I don't want to process him. He is special. He was the lone survivor of my first hatch. This is only picture I have of him. but he is result of a speckled sussex rooster over a red sex link. He is very friendly :)
This was his when he was about 10 weeks old.

And this is his yesterday :)

Here is his father
