Ugh! I have no idea what virus is going around that decided to hit me this week, but it hit hard.

Recovering now, but I even started home from work a couple days. I haven't felt that bad in years!

Now, if I can figure out where a couple birds get out every day...

hope you feel better soon :( it tore through our house over the past week too and my son got it worst of all. We actualy had to take him to the doctor because it went to his chest. Poor guy only made it to school one day this week and they have him on a strong antibiotic (z-pack, or something like that?). He actually woke up panicked one night because he couldn't breathe. Scary.

Was this the stomach virus that hit? It's been all over around here... Thankfully I mised it so far....

More head and chest. Of course I didn't eat for almost two days, so I don't know about stomach.

The bad thing about living alone: when you're sick, no one takes care of you and the chores still need done.

Ugh! Add being a single parent to that & it's even worse. Kids don't do their chores when I CAN go check on them. They really don't get done when I'm sick. Then I have to raise heck or do it myself. Plus clean up the mess the monsters made pretending to do chores.

3 of my Easter HAL babies are out! 1 yellow and 2 blues :) Others are pipped and some have nothing.

Is it okay or normal for them to be panting a little? My temp is 100 :/

I drop the temp to 98.5 (or close) for hatching (forced air incubator). High humidity + high temps is dangerous according the the Porter Turkey website. I follow "turkey protocols" because I consider them slightly harder to hatch than chickens, so I figure good for them is optimal for chicks.

Here are some of the turkeys (and a guinea) in my basement. The white ones are Midget Whites and the 3 dark ones are Royal Palm x Black Mottled. One of our black mottled hens is my very favorite bird on the whole farm. She really knows how to extract treats from me, I expect her babies are learning that too.

So cute! Also, my aunt said her little chicks are thriving and she is enjoying their developing plumage. She said they seem to be getting feathers in quicker than she remembers her TSC chicks from a few years ago. Do you think this is because A: she has a poor memory (ha!) or B: yours are bred to be good egg layers and hardy, so they have to develop faster? Just curious on your opinion.

It must be because they are "super chicks"

(couldn't find a pic of a chick with a tiny cape)

I have noticed that some breeds feather out faster than others. Ameraucanas as slow, but Welsummers sprout feathers right away and are the first to jump up on the edge of the brooder to "scope out the terrain" (and presumably report back to the others). Any turkey poults on the other hand, are always leading the "landing party" when they finally make a break for it.

It could be some of both going on, though I would never accuse someone of a poor memory - that is very likely to come back around someday. Much safer to declare them to be super chicks.
