my BA is a friendly ham also, he thinks nothing of hopping up on a lap or joining us at the picnic table.

Named Gabby because he constantly chats with us.

That's what I was thinking too. Our BA, Mary Poopins is a Yakker too. I can hear her every morning while the coop is still locked up. She makes almost a bellowing sound. Glad to hear it a breed trait, good to know!

This is good news! Mope they got that fire under control. I didn't realize that you kept Marans. We've got Black Coppers and just got a new flock of White and Cuckoo. I hope to show them at Sussex... That is if this Avian Influenza doesn't find it's way here. The latest news that I've gotten is that the high Path H5/H7 hasn't gotten here yet....but there are confirmed cases of low Path AI in Pennsylvania now. This is an e-mail I received yesterday morning from Nan Hanshaw.

Good morning,
PADLS has reported several avian influenza PCR positive samples collected at one market as part of PDA/USDA routine LBM surveillance in our Philadelphia markets.
The PCR positive samples were collected from red fowl and guineas. A suspect PCR was reported from a pool of water duck swabs. Samples are being sent to NVSL and the market has been quarantined. Major distributors have been notified.

It appears that the birds which were test positive and suspect were purchased at a PA auction. An investigation is underway.

Thank you,

GLW are very pretty birds.

These are my 2 boys. I am trying to sell them or they will be going to freezer camp. I no longer breed GLWs, going to focus on silkies

@AnneInTheBurbs That rooster looks like my BA. He is a good looking boy. He lost the tips of his comb this winter to frost bite :( He is a good boy, never tries to flog me even with his hormones coming in.

Troyer feeds cracked corn and mealworms to his dragonflies to put on some size before processing them

Message for the locals around me,
Today and Friday will be processing day for roosters and older rabbits... nothing fancy, all skinned quickly and bagged for canning over the weekend.

If you have anything that you need done, get it over here and I can add it..

Most people try to avoid broodiness and it gets bred out of "production" lines of large fowl. Bantams are not bred for high egg production and most go broody a lot (silkies and cochins being extreme examples of this). In large fowl, I would pick a breed you like and get stock from someone that raises them for fun or showing.

Some breeds have a reputation for broodiness, but I think it varies a low between strains and even individual hens. Here are some LF breeds that are know for broodiness:
Buff Orpingtons
Marans
Sumatras
Games
Cochins
ahhhh, ya forgot WYandottes....those girls drove me crazy last spring...
