Very cute wing!!!

Speaking of broodies, my broody has slowly been distancing herself from her babies. Yesterday, I saw her squat for the rooster and today she layed her first egg. Outside the coop door, but at least she's back. Her babies care about her way more than she cares about them, it's a little sad actually. They have to learn sometime though I guess. They're about 7 weeks. She kept her last batch much longer.
awwww, i have my first broody. I hope she's a good momma. But it will be hard when she kicks em out. Maybe they'll let me snuggle them instead?

That is strange, definitely worth getting tested for. Mine's legs just got weak, they got off balance, and then we had to put them out of their misery because they couldn't get to food and water. I'm kinda scared they'll come back with the report of death as "broken neck". I wrote in the paperwork that all that had it had to be culled, so I think they'll know. What I was worried about was their symptoms matched no diseases that I researched. All of them that sounded similar were diseases they could get under a certain age, and they were already past it.

oh they will know....  the once over for mine was nothing specific.  good weight, healthy tissues etc.   microscopically was tumors...everywhere.

She said mine had thickened nerves (but she didn't look microscopically yet), and she said it could maybe be Marek's (which I don't suspect because only 3 got it and they're pretty young for that) or a B2 deficiency... but those were just guesses as of right now.

ETA the first thing she said when she called was "we found a significant amount of trauma to the birds neck... did you euthanize it?" I found it kind of funny, even though it isn't really.

Some broodies are kind of mean and kick their babies to the curb, and others do it gradually. They'll stop calling their babies when they get too far, then they stop clucking for treats, and then they don't let them under their wings at roost-time. Others broodies just flick the switch, decide they don't want their babies anymore, and it's a complete 180. They peck and chase their babies away, and want nothingg to do with them.

I've let one of my hens raise clutches on two different occasions, so I only have experience with one particular hen being broody. None of my others have ever gone broody except for her.

Not to burst your bubble, but they probably won't let you cuddle them :( broody babies are particularly crazy because they weren't raised by humans and therefore don't trust them at all. Mine typically won't even eat out of my hand. Mom has to take it from my hand and give it to them

Good morning Pa
I will continue to set eggs from the bantam Cochin pen and the hedemora pen as I get broodies.
Give me a holler if you want chicks from either one of these pen's.
Right now I have
3- 1 day olds...hedemora
2- hedemora chicks that are a week old

2 MF bantam Cochin that are day olds

Those bantam Cochins are so cute, I'd take 5 if I had the room. ;)

I think it's safe to say one of the turkeys is a tom, lol. I was trying to look at their snoods and I thought one looked like it might be a little bigger than the others. Then I come out this afternoon to see him all poofed up and strutting around! His neck was not bright red like that this morning either. I'm guessing that happened when he poofed up his feathers?

With the chooks the past 6mos its been two steps forward, 4 steps back....

Got home late last evening and was having a cocktail on the patio when the dog alerted...(the deer have moved in)....let him run....came back about an hour later and he settled in...then alerted again, got the flashlight and lit up a pair of eyes about 15yds behind my fence....it moved off promptly and I couldn't get close enough to tell what it was, but; I suspect mr fox....as its the only critter agile enough to run down the cliffs behind my house....

Got up this morning and let everyone out....babies stayed in the coop....I took them some water and feed.......came back about 1.5hrs later and one of the wyandottes is lying bloody in the nesting box...one of two of the big girls got after her.....pulled her inside cleaned her up....it looks like a 50-50 at this point....kicked all the big girls out of coop#1 and now its the x4 8weeks and x2-3 5weeks...

Note to self...always make sure your alpha hen is a good one...mine is troublesome....

Put out anti freeze for the fox very dangerous for animals to drink they like it cause it's sweet. Just a thought should do the trick. Don't let any animals get it that you like.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Sometimes if I can catch I moth I'll rip one of it's wings off and throw it to one of the babies. It's hilarious watching them play keepaway and it helps them learn how to catch fast/fluttering things.
