I "think" there are some reading lights out there that wrap on the neck. If you're like me, you don't need a lot of light, just more than pitch black.
. I just wear the light that's strapped to my head, not very flattering, but the animals don't seem to mind.

I had a question I've been looking around but cant seem to find a solid answer.  How much would a chicken that just started laying sell for?
There is no solid answer. If it's a member of BYC, it can be free or five dollars. If you want money, it can be up to twenty.

This answer. I always discount or give away my hatching eggs if it's a BYC member, feel like everyone here is family. And I've gotten back as much or more than I've given.

Love you guys.
. :love

It's rough.  I got them as little peeps.  Have raised them and cared for them for this long on top of that this is my first flock ever. So I guess I'm alittle more attached that I should be.

Parrish, so sorry. Tough to put a monetary value on a pet.

Parrish:

Nothing wrong with being attached...they are pets not livestock....imho, you should understand 4oz of feed per day for 6mos....then your time and energy to get up in the morning to feed/water and care for you chooks and same in the evening to take care of them....if your chooks are heritage/ exotic that's an addition cost to replace...hope thing work out for you,

Stake, Thank You! You have answered a question that's been on my mind. I'm going through 100# of feed each week, I have approximately 50 mature birds, looks like I'm a little over the 28oz/week, but a lot closer than I'd thought I'd be. I'll factor in that most of my birds are pretty hefty, Orpingtons and Marans.

Yeah, there are some good eggs here. Some very talented ones too! I'd give anything for some more of Stake's beer, Fisherlady... Well, I can always find a reason to see her! LOL!
I think we've lost all the soap makers. :-(

I'm on mobile right now so the picture is smaller but here are Roxy and Diva, my Rhodebar pulleys, also from dheltzel.

I go through 500 - 600 lbs a week, but have well over 300 birds, some are still young, but some are peafowl and turkeys, so it averages out I guess. Those turkeys use their lower bills like shovels to dig feed out of the feeders. I think that group of about 20 turkeys goes through about 150 lbs per week. I call them and the peas my "free loaders", they are pets and will never pay their own way. IDK how Porters makes any money at all, they probably feel good if they break even.

I took pics of the eggs:

Top row:
2 Reese CCL's - different pullets, obviously
1 Rhodebar
2 Bielefelder
1 Welsummer

Bottom row:
1 non-Reese CCL
1 Bielefelder

I'm surprised by the darkness of the BF's, certainly not as dark as a good Welsummer, but sometimes the Welsummers lays eggs about the same shade as the BF's that are in this pic. Definitely darker than the Rhodebars.

Also very happy with the very blue Reese egg. Assuming the colors stay consistent, I think I will need to separate out some of the bluest eggs to be next year's breeders.
I didn't know BF eggs are so dark either. It's good to know.

You may put a drop of different food coloring in the chickens' vent to tell who's laying which egg. Are you going to mix the CCL that laying green eggs with Rhodebar to create green egg layers?

Does anyone have Blue Swedish ducks?
I was interested enough in them enough to go through a hatchery, but knowing they are so rare, I'd rather get breeder stock. I... Talk too much. Sorry.
