background info: we have a run with a coop on each end. There is a door in the middle that can open/close to separate the run area into 2 runs. Layers are in one coop. Chicks growing out in the other. They have been able to see each other for the past 2ish weeks between the closed run door in the middle.
Screened the door between the big girls and the chicks (8-9 weeks) and made a few openings across the bottom for the little chicks to squeeze through, but not the big girls. Big girls stick their heads through the holes, but chicks are pretty skittish of any contact and pretty much avoid the panic holes.
Opened the "screen door" today just to see how they all mix. Big girls mostly ignored chicks, but when the treats disappeared, they became more interested in the chicks and the chick area. Chased, grabbed feathers, etc. Nothing too torturous, but chicks are terrified and stayed hidden under the coop. Too much drama, so I closed the divider door so the chicks would come out. It was open for 3 hours and no blood.
Should I continue to do this each day - opening the door for a few hours trying to integrate the littles with the bigs? I thought with 11 chicks and 8 layers, the chicks would have the advantage of numbers and show a bit more dominance, but they are scared to death.
Do you think the chicks will ever explore the panic holes and venture over to the layer pen?
