The winds here are horrible too. Hard to sleep when it sounds like a train is coming through the house and the house is shaking. We keep loosing power here. My silkies didn't want to come out of their coop because of the cold, the wind and the snow covering. We are supposed to get more snow tonight

Woke up to about 2 inches of snow this morning... figures, it is always cold and miserable on the weekend of the maple syrup festival. It was sunny and in the 60s all week, maple syrup festival - boom. Freezing temps and snow (last year was in the teens/20s!).

Hoping it will warm back up asap... it makes me nervous to have so many little chicks outside in a new-to-me brooder system (MHP). I have lost a few birds, but I think they had a really rough shipment. I've been cleaning pasty butt on a few birds and those birds seem weaker and end up dying later that day or the next. Just lost our bonus chick today. I had been hopeful that it was a blue cochin since we had lost one our first chicken year (it was my daughter's special bird). Cleaned pasty butt yesterday (we picked them up from the PO on Wednesday so they are still just a few days old). It was fine this morning, but was laying next to the food dish when we got back from the maple syrup festival this afternoon.

I don't think I posted pictures of the chicks in this thread... here are a few...

Chicks from dheltzel - blue egg black sexlink, olive egg legbar cross (is that what we're calling it?), and welsummer.

Shipped chicks. Mostly cornish roasters, a few delaware, 2 SLW, 2 red laced white cornish (lost one :-( ), and 2 dark cornish. Cornish roasters are mostly in the chicken tractor, other cornish and delaware will be in the new breeding pen together, and the SLW will move to the laying coop.

Close ups... this was the bonus chick we got with our order that we lost today. Feathered feet really would have been no Bueno in our uncovered run, but it was still a sad loss.

Red laced white cornish - never heard of these before, thought it would be a nice color variety to try with our Delaware - Cornish cross. I hope the remaining one survives, they seemed smaller and more fragile than some of the other birds for some reason.

And the meaties in the chicken tractor.. I was a little nervous about the Littles getting picked on or trampled by the bigs, but they seem to be doing okay together :-)

I also got a nice shot of these eggs in the nest box the other day. Such a cute little trio of eggs that I went back inside for my camera before collecting them.

Then you should have gone yesterday. It was apparently a good day to go.

The chicks are adorable, sorry to hear you're having some health issues with them. We had 2 waterers in with our shipped meaties, one had Apple Cider vinegar added, the other had Nutridrench added. Any chicks which seemed 'off' get a spritz of BluKot on their back to mark them and they got spoon fed/dropper fed a couple cc's of a mix of apple juice, brown sugar and Nutridrench every couple of hours. Usually it would only take a couple of shots of the good stuff and they would be back to normal.

Edit to add... I do know that meaties are prone to pasty butt if they are too warm, make sure that the brooder has enough room to allow them to spread out and have a cooler area if they want it. We usually heat one end of the brooder area and put the food and water in the cool end.
