Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

We were supposed to get rain but nothing. I'm still figuring out this message board. Any recommendations on breeds or wherever get chicks or pullets? We're not going yet, but hopefully within a couple weeks.
go to local breeders or try to find people on here. do not go to tractor supply yes you will get birds but you will get mixed breeds or the wrong breeds..this year they had mixed breeds and no selection of birds im glad i found a very good breeder to learn from

I am trying to cut back on the number of eggs because demand for chicks is less now, but I just can't bear to eat a Legbar or Welbar egg (or a half dozen other breeds). But I only set 190 chicken eggs yesterday. That's a lot less than I was doing, so maybe I'm ok . . .

The very first Wheaten Ameraucana chick hatched yesterday! Small chick, but so very yellow. I don't have any other breeds with yellow chicks.

The Lavender Silkied Ams are hatching great now (finally). Only 1 pullet is laying (out of 2), but I'm getting 5-6 eggs per week and this weekend 5 chicks hatched, bring the total of the last 5 weeks to 16. These are not for everyone, but if you like silkie bantams even with their special needs, these could be perfect for you. They lay very blue eggs, and once they get going, lay pretty well. They are naturally tame like silkies, it must be a genetic thing. They can only get up on the 2 ft high roosts, not the 4 ft ones. If you are interested in these, let me know and if something works out with the "chicken train" they may be able to hitch a ride to your place.

And last, but not least, the first peachick of the season just hatched. I am going to get this one really tame, like Pilgrim our tom turkey. I need a name that works for either gender. It should be "sweet pea", but that wouldn't work for a boy. SP fell asleep on my chest tonight. This is going to be fun, having a really tame pea.

Wyatt:

I currently have three adolescent boys and six girls (two adults)....currently, #3 has one adolescent girl and the other two are sharing the other 5 girls...the pecking order is pretty well set between the boys....its a little harder on the girls, but the alpha roo is pretty level headed and the #2 boy just can't mess with the older girls without the assistance of the alpha....I have a bunch more two week olds that will ease the pressure on the existing girls...so far so good...you may just want to wait it out...in general if roosters killed each other, many flocks would be negatively impacted...nature has a way of accommodating these types of imbalances, my two cents....
I have 22 chickens total with 4 known boys at this time, i am hoping that everyone lives together without bloodshed and death, I guess I will see!

I think I'm wanting to start with pullets in order to start getting eggs quicker. I'll hand raise some chicks next year after we're up and going. Any tips on where I can get pullets instead of chicks? I'm in Pittsburgh area. Thanks!!!

Well.... I think I may have more cockerels than pullets. I've been posting on Silkie threads getting much appreciated help as this is my first time. If they happen to be all boys then I'm going to have to do a lot of rehoming soon. :(

Frankie's head is poking out on the left, but his body is being covered by someone else. There's also one in the back that I didn't label (bad Mama).

Not unless you want to drive a while. Actually... There are swaps at most TSC and some fairgrounds. Check on the bulletin board at the feed stores for the swaps. Check Craig's List too. Meyer Hatchery is in Polk, Ohio. They have started birds too. However, their beaks have been trimmed. It may hurt to look at them.

I take it you are not at the point of processing? I understand. It took me a long time. You can get a butcher to do it for you.
