Ok. I know I'm breaking in but I was wondering about something. Since this is the very active thread with so many intelligent people who know birds so well. Can I feed my chickens whole corn? (Just in the winter before bedtime to help them stay warm) our must it be ground?

Breaking her is always an option, if you have access to a wire bottom cage you can set her up in it and tell him to let her out on Tuesday...or you can find fertile eggs and give her 4 of them and let her do her thing.
They will get out once a day on their own and then he doesn't need to worry about her for 3 weeks, lol

They're gonna live with hubby 's cousin soon, because we are moving to NY and cannot find a rental place allowing chickens . Their current flock is only 5, our 6 hens are already a big number. If I add several cute chicks in, they will be really upset.

It is too hot for Brownie to sit in nesting box now. I will try to break her by using a large dog crate. If I put in enough food and water, hubby should be able to let her out on Tuesday.

Has anyone every crossed wyandotte & barred rock?....just wondering what is the end product was...
not looking to do this..just curious.
I would love to produce the awesome bird I have from *Chad...barred rock /Marans..i think...
She is fantastic!! Lays 5-6 days, dark brown eggs and not broody!! I can't ask for better...she is a bit nuts, but she is also a chicken so...
My uncle, who raised show chicks for decades, told me the only difference between a rock and a wyandotte was the comb, so you should get something like either a rock or wyandotte. I'm not certain hoe the comb inheritance goes with those.

I think a small amount of corn is a good treat for winter. Whole corn is ok if they have grit.

That sounds like a good plan with your situation, make sure the cage is wire bottomed and elevated because they need free air flow under their bellies.

You are not breaking in!
Our birds don't seem to like the dried whole kernel corn but my DH buys the cheap canned corn and we will drain and rinse it to remove salt and give that as a winter treat.

I'm confused. I took Brownie out of nesting box, and she just running around free range with other girls and never tend to go back to coop. Her poops are light green and runny. Is she really broody or she's sick? Or egg bound?

o. Ok. Didn't think of that. Does that help them keep warmer over winter? I read somewhere that feeling them corn before bed helps them stay warmer during winter nights. Does canned corn help like dry corn? Maybe I'll just get crushed so I don't end up with whole that they don't eat. Thanks fOr info.
