:hit. One of my turkeys was killed last night. She must've fallen off the roost and the raccoon got her through the welded wire. Everyone was okay and there were no breakins otherwise. Only the head and nibbled leg of course... Tonight they will be in the big coop. I have most of the day to make some adjustments. For a few days, they will have to use the main door, until my door opener comes in. Now to go and bury Pearl.

Dheltzel, should I get him another girl or two? Especially since the one is still sick?

:hugs
Yes. You should get five or six more.

Haha, likely story!

Sorry to hear....predators are a constant pia....

Yes they are. My run will be super secure. I am going to dig in hardware cloth and put railroad ties on top of that.

Finished my roosts today. And a temporary chicken ramp. Not cosmetically good, but it will hold up until I get the run done and the chicken guard door installed. That should be here tomorrow, so I will install this weekend. The roosts may be a bit too close together for turkeys, but I can add more later. Right now, safety is key. The roosts are about a foot apart. Edited to add, the roosts and the chicken ramp are made out of materials I was able to get from my neighbor's construction trash and other places. :D

@AnneInTheBurbs-I have a bunch of feed bags for you. They're just the woven plastic type. I think there are both 100 lb size and 50 lb size. There's at least 1, 100 lb bag stuffed full lol. If you want to pm me your address, I'll mail them out to you this weekend.

Toms are not that hard on the hens, I think 3 will be fine. I believe the sick one will eventually get better. Turkeys seem to take longer to get over respiratory problems than chickens. I have a mixed group and treated them for over a week. After the week, the chickens seemed cured, but the turkeys coughed for another week or so. They are fine now, and my experience is that once they get over it, they never get it again. since turkey hens can live and lay for at least 5 years, getting them through it is worthwhile..

Good evening all:

Had a visit from the fox this evening....and I was home and never herd a thing(because I was home, I let them free range).....all the big girls/boys are intact....the four young ones were taken,,,,found a feather pile for the CCL girl and found the desiccated body of one of the OE roos....the two others are MIA....knowing this fox, they are gone too but, I will be up early in case 'he' comes back for the last carcass...I've lost the entire year's youngin's to the fox....only Anne has a few I gave her to re-populate her crew....really disappointing.....

Oh my goodness, stake, that's terrible.  I'm so sorry.  Poor things.
So sorry Stake. Glad you got at least one back.

Hubby gave in and turned the heat on when he came home last night :/ I was hoping to at least make it to November before we started guzzling up the oil.

I'm in the other camp, hubby wants heat on, I want it off.

Eek!! Went to feed the girls and own of my Gold Stars was slow picking at the meal worms. She was struggling to keep her balance. When she fell down that man took that as an invite to breed her. She couldn't really get up and fell down again and he got on top of her. So I chased him off of course he didn't like that and came after me well I broke a stick on him. She kept running away and falling down and then sitting in a heap. I caught her and put her in the small coop away from the flock. What do you think is wrong with her? I had the same problem last fall with a buff Orpington and we had to put her down.

Sorry. :hugs[/Wish I knew.COLOR]

Thanks for the offer! I think MCC may have popped some on the mail. Let me see how many I need. I don't want to be a hog!

I only have two hens now, I had 3 originally and Tom. What did you use to treat the turkeys? Wheezy is still wheezing an she looks pretty sad today. Especially because she has red markings on her feathers from the vitamin A supplement I tried to give her. I don't know if she swallowed it.

This time of day is so beautiful. Wish the chooks would all go to bed so I could finish work inside.

That's gorgeous! Thanks for sharing!

Good early afternoon, PA!I live in Schuylkill County and will be moving soon. Looking to rehome my last two old lady silkies where they can live out the rest of their natural life and not become dinner. I'm not sure where I can post, or if I can post, something of this nature in the forum. If anyone has any advice, or interest in Loon and Big Bird, I'd be grateful.

Have a great day!

Just got the new (old girl) silkies from Wellwupdo today. He was very generous and gave me all of his supplies. The girls are quarantined in the garage for now.

And here is the rest of my flock, safe and sound in their new home. They were each carried there after it got dark. Tom is very heavy and strong! Once I have the chicken guard door opener, I will keep them in there permanently. I went around and tested all of the ventilation areas to make sure they were secure. The bottom roost is broken because I tried to step on it, haha. It on,y gave way because the wood broke, not where I secured it. It was an old railing, so not meant for weight support. Lol! There is another roost beneath it, which is not visible.

Now to build the run....
