Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I'm still learning about all the different breeds out there. There are some we'd love to have in our flock. Like the Euskal Oiloa. Does anyone have any experience with this breed? I saw them on @dhentzel's Sandhill catalog. Understandably the personalities of chickens vary from bird to bird, however the descriptions I've found on the internet say it's the friendliest chicken breed. Completely unaffraid of humans and like to jump up. My kids would love a super friendly chicken like that and if we have a chance we'll get a couple.

Also with all the sad news on PA Unite recently, it doesn't hurt to have one or two backups.

I highly reccomend the silkie chicken breed they are really calm and I haven't even raised them all of there life to handle them.

X2. My silkie cockerel is the only boy I have that will willingly come to me and let me pick him up.

Speaking of which, I seperated Blue and Angel today. I'm going to start collecting eggs from those two in about a week.

Do any of you have problems with Turkey Vultures? I see them all the time swooping around, and I had thought they were hawks before my neighbor corrected me. They have not swooped down at all on my chickens, and I have read that they prefer carrion and rarely eat live prey. I wonder if there are less hawks because of them? They are beautiful when they fly!

Anne:

They should not bother your chickens....you can tell vultures because they wobble when they glide.....

Everybody remember to get out and vote today! It is a great privilege!

Yeah, it's so important for people in PA to vote. Here at NY really doesn't matter - everybody already knows the results. Just kidding

It's always good to show your opinions.

So, question about when chickens will start laying after molt. The girls are starting to look really good again. Colleen is almost back to normal and Niko and Ruth never did do a full molt. Will they start doing the submissive squat when they are ready to lay again or are they going to pass on doing that again? I am so glad we are down to one rooster. He's so much less rapey than Zippy was and he is very good about calling them over for treats.

@Chicken Egg 17 A silkie in the flock would be a lot of fun for sure. I never knew they were among the friendliest of breeds too. Another plus for the silkie! We got into keeping chickens for the eggs, and now keeping a low production fluffy pet silkie chicken is starting to sound appealing :-o

Predator/scavenger question. At night, I try to lock up the food bowls so that I can feed my chickens, and not the critters in the woods. So I put the empty water bowl over the chicken food bowl. In the morning, it was all eaten. So I put a chunk of a cinder lock on top, and it was moved. Last night I put a full sized cinder block on top, and this morning it was pushed aside! Could a raccoon do that? I have to get a trail cam so I can see what is doing this. Weird!
