Got my first two orders of eggs from my silkies, got an order for 2 dozen and one for 1 dozen so I will be making thirty bucks to go to the seramas I will be buying in the spring. I am selling them for 5 dollars per half a dozen

I'm betting my neighbor would love your OE rooster, but the logistics don't really work right now... she has 20 layers but they are just chicks and keeping a single roo by himself until the girls grow up would be a hassle.

Thanks for thinking of that. :) My OE rooster found a really nice new home today--sad to see him go, but so glad for where he went. If your neighbor might be interested in the younger Lavender Orpington (closer in age to her chicks), I still have him! ;)

Just posting to say how happy I am to have chickens in my life again and a nice big coop to fill! :weee

Turkey action shot!

The girls like peanut butter, and have learned to hang around me when I am eating...

Edited to add: Gave everyone a week of Oxytetracycline Hcl for a week. Wheezy is still wheezing, but hopefully she will kick it and just has leftover symptoms.

Sometimes I wonder if I should selectively breed for the cutest chicks, since they are the main "product" I sell. I have to admit I looked at raising Orust because the chicks are so distinctive and cute. It turns out the roos tend to be extra aggressive and I figured they would be picking fights a lot longer than they would be cute little chicks.

They are absolutely stunning as adults too--which for me is very important since my chickens and henhouse are part of my backyard landscaping, kind of sort of.
If you change your mind, put me down for a pullet --or three chicks if I can give back the evil roos!
Dennis , do your CCL's lay your bluest shade of egg?..Just wondering...

I see little overall difference in color or size between the CCL's and Ameraucanas (blue/black/splash). There is some variation between hens and more over time, they sometimes start out more turquois and get truer blue as the season progresses. The blue egg black sexlinks are definitely lighter blue, but no hint of green at all. They sometimes get nearly white over time because they lay so many eggs. I find the BBS Ams that I had were very late to start laying, even with supplemental lighting. CCL's and sexlinks lay much earlier.

I will have to report on the new strains of Ameraucanas as they start to lay. The silkied Ams and bantam lavenders lay very blue eggs.

@dheltzel what do you have for sale? Dad wants to replace the two pullets we lost with two more red sexlinks. I prefer variety.

It sounds rediculously windy out tonight! I'm hoping that the wind will blow down the rest of those oak leaves so I can run the lawn sweeper just one more time tomorrow and be done with it! I ran it for an hour the other day and got everything picked up before dark. By morning, the yard was covered again :/

A few days ago, I heard a ruckus down by the coops before I let the birds out. I thought that something was very wrong with all the quacking going on. Stephen was upset too, but the quacking had me very worried. Jojo sounded like he was going to kill someone!
When I saw three ducks outside, I figured my birds would chase them off like they do most visitors from next door. Instead, the Pekin cross Drake and even the two smaller ducks had a little tussle with my ducks. I was annoyed to say the least. By the evening, I was thinking about having the extra ducks for supper! Everyone was getting along just fine by then. I just don't want the extra mouths to feed or space taken in the coop. After several days, I finally asked the neighbor about the ducks. They are not hers. I now own three more ducks.
I am so glad I did not kick the ducks out late at night the previous two nights. Or was it three? :D
