Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Aww, I'm so sorry for your loss :( I haven't had enough experience with predators to give you any advice on it though.
Thank you. I might need to hatch some fluffy butts to make me feel better too. I have some eggs coming in February from Once in a Blue Moon. It'll just be even longer until I finally get a blue egg.

Are they the bantams? How far are you from Pittsburgh?

3 bantam lavender Ameraucana, 4 are large fowl (2 lavender and 2 silver).

Lehigh Valley here. Technically a quarter mile out into Jersey on the Delaware but for all intensive purposes - from BYC to Craigslist and Dating apps - I live in Pennsylvania

Do you have any kind of estimated date from Sandhill? I just want to be sure I'm ready in the spring. Maybe I can get some Jersey Giants at the same time? I believe you said your Aunt raised them.
Am I the only one wo has a problem with turkeys fighting with chickens? I have already got rid of three turkeys still have one she will be going to a new home also if she can't fix her attitude.
The turkeys I bought from Dheltzel are getting along well with my chickens. They are midget whites, so they are a bit smaller.

Lost my first chick last night. It must have been before I latched the coop for the night.

my Easter egger was the biggest by 2 weeks and like a momma to the rest. Now down to 6. They are hiding in the bushes and I am standing watch.
A hawk has been stalking them but they fly away with their prey right? Found my girl 20ft from the coop.

So sorry. It's so sad to lose one. Poor little things have no defenses.

Sandhill doesn't start hatching until March. That's good in my opinion, I hate the idea that rare chicks are subject to February weather going through the mail. Even March can be kind of dicey for shipping. The chicks I got last March 5th traveled fine, but it would not have needed to be so, things could have gone bad. Some of those chicks are laying the eggs I am holding onto now, deciding if I want to hatch them. The Silver and Lavender Am pullets are very nice looking and seem very calm in nature. I don't need more, but I want more.

That's great, I don't think I'll be ready for anything before then. I was just trying to get a ballpark. How many eggs does your largest incubator hold?

LOL, that's a lightweight. The one I made holds 576 (48 dozen). Plus I have 3 that hold 288 each, for a total of 1440 (120 dozen). Fitting the week's eggs into the hatcher is the problem. I think that is the "weak link" in my current system. My big hatcher handles about 100 eggs ok, but if I start stacking them in baskets, the air flow is inhibited and I get poorer hatches. I'm building a new hatcher that I hope will solve this for good.

For those of you following my coop set up, I have been working hard to finish my run. It has been challenging to keep it low cost and large enough. Also challenging is building it around all of the stumps, roots and trees. I will be posting pics soon. I have decided my original run is too small, but lumber is expensive the way I am buying it. I think I am going to use pallets to extend the run. This way I can have more room for the chooks, without buying too many more materials. We'll see how this works out, I've just been planning it in my head so far...

Also, today is the day my Mom passed away last year. Should've worn waterproof mascara....
