Chicken Math time!!I have technically 16 chickens. However, I have one rooster, and two girls who are two old to lay, so that means I only have 13, right? I did have more initially, but I had a couple of predator attacks before I had their coop done.

Dear, you forgot turkeys. Wait, any of them survived Thanksgiving?
Still waiting to see if Rusty is going to be a good boy. Hope so, he;s so gorgeous, I'd hate to make him dinner... I figure we should see his true colors by February or March.
Hey:
I'm betting on Rusty.....OE...You will probably want to replace him with a Full breed Roo sometime in the future...but his dad is really good about taking care of the girls....give him another few months to fill out, he's still growing....
Haha! You can't away with anything around here..Yes, I still have three turkeys, but they don't count in chicken math either, right?

Right! If anyone asks how many chickens you have, you are not to include anything but chickens. Adding in the turkeys, ducks, guineas, etc, would be deceptive. No, turkey math is an ENTIRELY different thing lol
Wish I could help, those blue orps have nice color. I have too many roos too, but at least I can let them loose to make their own way on the farm. I hate to take that chance with some of them, but I can't house them all over the winter. The Ameraucanas I have released so far are doing great.
I don't know, but if you see her, tell her she is a lazy bum....
Where is @MotorcycleChick ? Is she still playing with that funny sweater?![]()

GM all:
As of 11:00p last night, my hatching eggs were in Jacksonville FL.......so, will they get he tomorrow (Sat) or will I lose Sunday and they'll arrive Monday?????
You guys are so good at enabling poultry maths.Right! If anyone asks how many chickens you have, you are not to include anything but chickens. Adding in the turkeys, ducks, guineas, etc, would be deceptive.
That doesn't look like Pennsylvinia Black's egg for me. Brownie's first egg was very blue, so I thought it's a legbar egg. After she laid 20+ day non-stop, then the eggs become almost white in sun and only look blue inside the house.I may replace him eventually. I know he's still young, so indeed I shall wait and see!
I think another one of my girls laid today! I think it was a blue sex link, but it may have been the other Gray too. The egg looks like it has a very faint blue tint to it. It's funny, I am getting eggs now, but I have yet to hear the egg song! Maybe it's just my timing?![]()
Cali gray egg on the left, new one on the right.

That was my experience also. They are very blue at first, then gradually run out of the blue "ink" and the egg color fades to the point they look white unless compared to a truly white egg. I still like them as production birds, but for people looking specifically to add blue eggs to their flock, I recommend Legbars as the best layer of consistently blue eggs. The blue egg sexlinks are even better layers, due to the hybrid vigor and their more productive maternal parent, but the fading could be disappointing for some people. I'm thinking of trying to add the blue egg gene to my Cali Greys, keeping the black barring. It would be a little tricky to get both the black and the blue egg genes homozygous, because they are both dominant, but it could be done with test crosses, and the resulting line would be pretty neat because black barred breeds exist in every egg color except for blue (and by extension, green/olive).That doesn't look like Pennsylvinia Black's egg for me.
