I am curious, @FluffButt, when you say you want a 'Production Red Rooster'. Is that a Rhode Island Red? Or a Red Sex Linked or... what breed exactly?

They are really gorgeous! I especially love the hens.

I think production red is hatchery RIR? But I heard that many of them are mean.

Thank you! I'm getting some pretty hens with very clear 'penciling' on the feathers. And I have also heard that RIR are pretty mean.

I also have a very low tolerance for mean roos. I have only 1 right now that has been testing me. Every now and then I feel a tug on the back of my pants and he's looking all smug about it. I don't need him for breeding, but so far he hasn't done anything bad. If he ever does, he gets tossed out of the pen to find his place among the free ranging Ameraucanas. They outweigh him by quite a lot and they "hunt" as a pack, so if he tries to fight his way into the social order they will clean his clock easily. I think he knows he's on thin ice and won't do anything more.

All the other roos are gentlemen and wouldn't ever attack a person. They are so pretty too, and have remained fairly tame. When I suspected the roos in a fertility issue, I just went outside and scooped up a nice looking one to put in the breeding pen. That was one time when being tame and friendly worked very well for him. He now has a harem of 13 pullets. He has zero problems with me!

Anyone that wants a great roo, I always have extras for good homes.

So one of my Silkies (or maybe both, I can't tell) has been sneezing for a week or so. At one point should I does the whole flock with antibiotics? They seem okay otherwise, eating and drinking normally. No runny nostrils or any other symptoms. I know they hide illness well. The silkies are pretty old, probably 6 or 7 years old. The other sick chicken I brought it was euthanized and cremated.

Good job posting the wrong picture, too funny! Yes I used to call them a RIR but they aren't a pure RIR, since they come from Tractor Supply. We haven't had any problems with our Red hen, so I'm hoping we get lucky with a nice pretty Red roo. I'll just have to spend a lot of time with him, which isn't an issue for me. I often let my chickens in the house
