Does anyone here have blue lace red wyandottes? are they really as blue as some of the pics? If so, and if Mama Niko goes broody again, would eggs be available? They look so amazing.

Thing is, I don't NEEEEEED (who am I trying to kid?) any more birds. But if she gets broody again, I'd let her. I did last year and now have 2 more pullets. Have 9 hens and one roo in a small backyard. No, I don't need more. Just WANT.

HELP! My incubator was reading at 102 earlier today. I was okay with that because the thermostat is on the opposite side of the heating unit. I came home and it is at 100, and I can't adjust the heater. The screw part that you turn in either direction seems to have come loose from the heating unit. It spins, but does not adjust the heater. Should I open the incubator up to see if I can fix it? Should I wait until tomorrow until they have had time to develop more?

Nittany Wyandottes used to have some out near State Collage. I'm pretty sure she's on BYC but It's been a few years and I'm not positive. I got one from her along with my very first chicks. I never got to see it grow up though since that group was the group that my dogs killed

Calm down and take a breath, it's ok. It's early enough that it should be just fine. You can open it and try to fix it and get it running right again. Or, if your broody has room to "babysit" those eggs until you get it fixed and stable again, that could work too.

On the gardening front, every time I try to grow cabbage some bug ends up eating it....any thoughts? same with other similar type plants.......

All the plants in that family (called Cruciforms because many have flowers that look like little crosses) need the same culture and are prone to the same bugs, cabbage worms and flea beetles. Cabbage worms are the caterpillars of those white butterflies that are so common. It is easy to control them with BT (Bacillis thuriensis) available as either dust or liquid. You will need to reapply after hard rains. It is biological warfare on any caterpillars, they get sick and stop eating, then die and spread the killer bacteria around to others.

The best defense for flea beetles is to grow in the fall instead of the spring. This reduces cabbage worms too. There are far more predators of the bugs out and about in September than in April, and they keep the number down a lot without any pesticide at all.

You can take the top off to fix it. If you didn't have a turner, you would have to do that to turn the eggs several times a day.

Doh! I feel so stupid, I didnt even think of that. I have to remember too, that broodies get off the nest sometimes once a day. Even with below freezing temps. The house is about 65 where my incubator is. Do I get a pass since it's my first time?

I have 6 two week olds right now but I think I have one splash, 4 Black laced and only one actual blue.

Don't feel stupid We all get so excited with hatching that we tend to panic when things don't work perfectly.

Speaking of broodies, today was the first day that I let Ana and her baby out of their solitary confinement. It's the first time that I seperated a broody. I thought it would be easier for them worth winter being here. Anyway, apparently, she tried to take her baby to bed in the coop but the baby couldn't figure out the ramp since it had never had to use it. I went out around 8:00 to close up the coops for the night and her baby came running to me to pick her it and keep her warm (she's the sweetest, broody raised baby I've ever met!). I have no idea how long she was out there alone in the cold but it's only 29° and she's what, MAYBE 3 weeks old? They're very resilient. I stuck her in my pocket until I got all the 14-16 week olds in the coop (they haven't figured it out yet), then I put her under her mama, who was patiently sitting on the floor in the corner, waiting for her baby.
