Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

So today is day 28 for my broody. She is sitting on turkey eggs (also chicken eggs placed on day 21). I saw her get off today, and there were no pips so far. I hope they start to hatch tomorrow! One of the chicken eggs looked it had some cracks on it, so I suspect that one will not (or did not) make it. Maybe when I check on her tomorrow there will be peeps!

I guess I was spoiled with my bantam Langshans from Msladyhawk. Her girls always hatched out chicks a day earlier than usual.

Fingers crossed! I hope the all hatch!

ah yes, MsLadyHawk raises talented birds. I keep thinking about turkeys again...I loved the ones we got from you last year, but the hatch rate was so low. Perhaps the Chicken train can straighten that out. Although I'm using the turkey hoop coop for my Wyandottes at the moment, and it would mean building another coop. Hmmm.

So, we went to Tractor Supply in Oxford tonight for a bigger water bottle for Pip ( my son's guinea pig) and some hay --and ...They have CHICKS! Amberlinks, Americanas (sic) "red and brown ones" (direct quote from the worker there) and ducklings. SOOOOO CUTE!!!!!!

Blarney--I am SO sorry to hear of your loss. Did you take that flashlight to your son? Good idea! But he's too tall. I've got to get on a stool to measure him these days. A shovel might reach. .

(just kidding--but I wish I had the time to farm sit for you! I would LOVE to!)

Hey B:

I am certainly no expert, but I am sure I can guide you though safely shooting your .22 .....yeppers, we do have a bit of a tude.....

Thanks Stake, learning how to handle the gun is in my to do list....it's just not very high up. Thank you for the offer of the 'Have a Heart' traps, we've got 3 set up currently, but no luck yet.

here are my peeps from Sally Sunshine, outside for their second night in a row- I hope the weather doesn't take a drastic turn and I can keep them out there! They are OEs, Icelandics and Crele Orpingtons...which is which, I could not tell you.

Awesome! What kind of candler do you use? I just use a flashlight...
I had to go to tractor supply yesterday because I had a couple coupons to use. Then I heard the PEEPS! It took every ounce of energy to leave there empty handed... patience!
Welcome!
Aw, they are adorable. I'm sure they will warm up to you. Fisherlady gave great advice.

I just use a cheap plug in one that I bought from TSC last year. It's not good for dark eggs but most of the time works fine. I got sick of batteries constantly dying on me lol.

Day 29 for the broody. When she got up today, the egg that I noticed was cracked was empty. She ate it! :sick

No signs of pips for the other ones. I know it's still within normal time frames, but when should I think about pitching the eggs?

If you can sneak in a candling at night, that may be the best option but I wouldn't even think of tossing them until they're 4 days late.

The chicken train is a great option since it'll be running through Easter weekend. I'm going to have plenty hatching. You just let me know what you want :)

What should I look for when candling the eggs under her tonight? Usually it just looks dark with a decent air cell. The cracked one did seem sloshy when I checked last night, but I didn't want to jiggle the others around.

They look ready to stay out.

Who's ready to go where? :p

Beautiful group, and I love the variety!

I agree with McC...they look ready to be out. If you can set them up a 'heat box' in a corner they should do fine. Think of a box on it's side with one flap down (from the top side) on the open end with some hay in it for them to snuggle into and maybe a heating pad over a piece of arched goat wire if you think they need extra. We have done this with birds and it has worked great, even in colder weather.

Thank you!!

There are 15 chicks in there, some are still pretty small and not feathered out completely, I'm hoping the exposure these last few days is pushing the feather development. But a box on it's side.....now those, those I have a LOT of, it's girl scout cookie season. :p

@Anne, I don't know where yer going....but yer taking me WITH you

Look for any internal pips (break will be up in the air cell) and movement. Movement will be hard to see this close to hatch though if they aren't internally pipped yet.

Fermented feed is great! In my experience I use a quarter less feed when I use it fermented. Currently we use 4 gallons fermented or 6 gallons regular, it's the same feed whether wet or dry. I recommend it highly. I make my own main mix and supplement with egg layer crumbles

So sorry!
